First off, don't do anything like this without buying a book. The two books available are the Haynes manual at any auto store, and the original GM manual available on eBay for about $10-$20.
The water pump is under the timing belt cover and driven by the timing belt.1.) Disconnect negative battery cable.2.) Position the engine at TDC compression for #1 cylinder.3.) Drain cooling system.4.) Remove upper and lower mount bolts from Power Steering pump, remove PS/AC belt, and move PS pump off to the side - DO NOT disconnect fluid lines from PS pump!5.) Loosen alternator bolts and remove alternator belt.6.) With a jack and a block of wood under the oil pan, raise the jack until it just barely lifts the weight of the engine.7.) Remove right engine mount (in front of timing belt cover).8.) Remove splash shields.9.) Remove crankshaft pulley center bolt and then crankshaft pulley. To keep engine from turning while you turn the pulley center bolt, you may have to remove flywheel cover and wedge a screwdriver into the ring gear teeth.10.) Remove timing belt cover.11.) Loosen the timing belt tensioner with a 16 point (I think) socket, and remove the timing belt. (The timing belt should be replaced with the water pump)
12.) Replace water pump. Do not overtorque the bolts. Use a good RTV sealant.
13.) When replacing timing belt, be SURE to check the alignment of the Cam to Crank. The crankshaft sprocket notch will align with the arrow on the enginge and the camshaft sprocket dowel will be in the 12 o'clock position with the camshaft sprocket mark aligned with the cylinder head at 9 o'clock.14.) Torque the timing belt tensioner with an Allen key and tighten the center bolt to spec.15.) Replace all parts removed in reverse order.16.) Fill coolant system / connect neg. batt. cable.17.) run motor and check for leaks/ proper operation.
Sounds tough, eh? I did it in the dead of a Chicago winter 5 years ago. Ha! (The Storm is still running by the way - on that same water pump!)
