Depends on which group. Immigration from Asia started about 15,000 years ago and has been ongoing since then. Some Aboriginal people, the Inuit for example would have arrived as recently as 1,000 years ago, displacing previous cultures. This would have occurred through out Canada just as it had every else. Canada is just one step in our migration out of Africa to South America.

When thinking of Canada keep in mind that no one lived in most of Canada 10,000 years ago as most of it was under Ice. Only after the ice sheet retreated could people live in most of what is today Canada, and the land would take hundreds, in some areas, thousands of years before it would become habitable.

Europeans arrived in Canada about 1,000 years ago.

Unless of course they arrived before the Clovis people.

The Australian aboriginal people were the first to settle in Australia. Humans originated in Africa and from there migrated to other areas, which was a slow process. South America, the Pacific Islands and Australia were settled quite recently.

How did the Metis act when Ruperts land was purchased by Canada?

Today the term Metis refer to all those of European and Aboriginal mixed blood but when Canada purchased Ruperts Land, complete with people, Metis referred to French and Aboriginal mixed bloods. Most mixed bloods in Ruperts Land were Scottish Aboriginal or British Aboriginal and that is still the case for Western Canada. This answer will refer to all those of European Aboriginal mixed blood as Metis. They responded as anyone would if they had found themselves being sold to a new country without being consulted. First with questions, then with action which included creating their own government to talk to Canada with. Canada would not accept any such governments in their colonies and responded violently. The Metis and other met violence with violence but were out numbered and out gunned.

What mutual benefits for first nation people and europeans were consequences of the fur trade?

Fur trades were mutually beneficial for both groups of people. Fur was in high demand in Europe, and so Europeans had Native people get animal furs for them to send back to Europe and make lots of money from. Native people in return were given handy things that they had not had before, such as guns, pots and pans, etc. (They were also given things that weren't so great, like smallpox infected blankets. Not good.) Hope that helps!

What was the purpose of residential schools?

When the Europeans came to Canada and found the aboriginal peoples here they found that their ''God'' was not the same and that their ways of living were different. The Europeans thinking that they are superior compared to the Aboriginal people they made Residential Schools and put them in the schools essentially to make them more like the Europeans.

Why didn't the Europeans know about aboriginal culture?

Quite simply, Europeans had never come across the aboriginal people before. Australia is a relatively young country, having only been discovered by Europeans in the 1600s, and neither the Portuguese nor the Dutch showed sufficient interest in the continent to take the time to get to know the people. The Europeans perceived themselves as superior to the aboriginal people.
