From a tiny city in the middle of Italy, Rome became the greatest and most powerful empire in the history of Europe and of the Mediterranean. This map shows the Roman Empire at its largest in 117 A.D. when Trajan was emperor.
During the days of the Republic, Rome fought three great wars against the other superpower of the Mediterranean. This other superpower was the Phoenician city of Carthage.
These wars are called Punic Wars because the Romans called the Carthaginians Poeni.
The Carthaginian Empire in 264 B.C. - at the beginning of the Punic wars
Rome fought THREE wars against Carthage. These wars were long, expensive and very difficult. Indeed during the second Punic War, the Romans almost lost the war because the Carthaginians sent Hannibal Barca, one of the greatest generals the world has ever seen, against them. However, Rome persisted and finally destroyed Carthage. It then became the most powerful state in the Mediterranean.
1st Punic War: 264 B.C. - 241 B.C.
2nd Punic War: 218 B.C. - 201 B.C.
3rd Punic War: 149 B.C. - 146 B.C.
Hannibal Barca was a Carthaginian general who hated Rome very much because Rome had defeated Carthage during the 1stPunic war.
In 218 B.C. Hannibal, one of the greatest generals of all time, launched an invasion of Italy through the French and Swiss Alps.
This was a very dangerous adventure because the long route took Hannibal's army, complete with horses and elephants through enemy tribes and high mountains covered with slippery slopes.
However, Hannibal finally reached Italy where he defeated three great Roman armies at the Battles of Trebia, Trasimene & Cannae.
Hannibal was so dangerous that no Roman general attempted to fight him again. They only followed him and tried to make his life as difficult as possible.
In fact, Hannibal survived for 15 years in Roman country with only one army. He could not be defeated.
However, the Romans simply refused to fight him until they were strong enough to do so. Eventually, the Roman general Publius Cornelius Scipio Africanus Maior collected a powerful army, trained it well and defeated Hannibal at the battle of Zama in 202 B.C.
After the battle of Zama, the Carthaginians begged Rome for peace. Rome accepted on condition that Carthage paid huge sums of money and disbanded her army and navy.
However, Rome never trusted Carthage. The important Roman senator, Marcus Porcius Cato, used to end every speech he made with the following words: Censeo autem Carthaginem delendam esse (I think, moreover, that Carthage must be destroyed.).
In 149 B.C. Rome sent an army under the command of Publius Cornelius Scipio Aemilianus Africanus Minor Numantinus, the son of the man adopted by the Roman general who defeated Hannibal at Zama.
The city of Carthage was besieged by the Romans for three years. After three years, the Romans took the city, killed and enslaved everyone and burnt the city to the ground.
Finally, Rome was the supreme power in the Mediterranean. No other Mediterranean power was as strong as Rome
There have been larger empires than Rome. They did not last as long. Part of Rome's brilliance was in its form of government. If you read the New Testament, some of that shines through. There were empire wide tax collectors for the empire similar to the IRS of the Federal Government of the United States. At the local level, the Sanhedrin made and enforced the local laws. A difference was that the governor was appointed by Rome. Otherwise, the Empire acted more like a federation than any other government until the creation of the United States.
