The answer depends on the definition of "mid-Atlantic" and what the cartographer thought when the map was made. The most accepted answer is 6:
New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware and Virginia.
HOWEVER
New York can be considered "northeastern" state or mid-Atlantic state.
New Jersey is sometimes lumped into the "northeast"
Virginia can be considered a "southern" state or mid-Atlantic state
West Virginia is sometimes lumped in as a "mid-Atlantic" state.
Ohio (believe it or not) is sometime even listed as mid-Atlantic, but it is most definitely NOT. It is a Midwestern state.
North & South Carolina are sometimes listed as "mid-Atlantic" states, but are both "southern" states.

There are six states in New England and three in the Mid-Atlantic, making a total of nine. So forty-one states are not a part of New England or the Mid-Atlantic.
More states are not a part of New England than are, so it would be easier to just name the states that are in New England. This way, you would know any state not listed is not a part of New England. Maine New Hampshire Vermont Massachusetts Rhode Island Connecticut
