What are the similarities between Hinduism and Taoism?

They both have a goal of moving away from "individuals" and becoming more as a part of a greater whole, a greater contribute to society itself. Also, They have both influenced Eastern Asia in countries such as: China, Japan, Taiwan, Korea, Vietnam, and Singapore. They both focus on the goal of self-improvement. In the end, the result is improved social order, which benefits all.

Hinduism is both philosophical and religious, while at the same time being interwoven in so much of the life and government of India (and other Hindu countries). The real goal of Hinduism is to build up enough good karma so that one can have a better life next time around.

Taoism isn't so much interested in any of that. Taoism teaches that in order to obtain real, lasting happiness, we should simply go with the flow. The universe is likened to a river, and if we go with it instead of fighting against it, then we are natural and happy. Furthermore, we become powerful, because by proxy we gain the power of the river behind us.

The words Tao and Dao are exactly the same characters in Chinese, and refer to the same thing. Taoism and Daoism are different English phonetic adaptions of that word. Tao is from a romanization created by the early European traders to help them understand the Chinese language. Phonetically (ignoring tones), it was close but not always identical to the word as it sounded. In 1958, the Chinese government adopted pinyin, a Romanization that is more consistent with the phonetic sounds in the (government accepted) Mandarin dialect. In pinyin the character is spelled and pronounced Dao.

Daoists believe that natural order is superior to social order, and also that a universal force guides all things. They also think that humans should live simply and in harmony with nature.

Legalists believe that a powerful and efficient government is the key to social order, an that punishments are needed to keep social order. People who do good will be rewarded, and those who don't get punished. Also, thinkers and ideas should be controlled by only the government.

Well, Buddha came from India. Siddhartha is said to be Buddha, where as Taoism is from China. Laozi is said to be the first to bring Taoism to the people. Now Buddha was before Laozi. 5th century BC. is said to be the period of Buddha. Some debaters say that the period is 2500 years before Jesus. 3rd to 4th century BC. was the period of Taoism. Exact period is unknown. Tao Te Ching is the teaching of Taoism. Both are similar. Because they do not talk of a High God. Tao Te Ching is like a riddle. It says there is a God and there is no God. Most of china did not understand this teaching. Tai Chi was invented, so you could understand the teachings. Then Bodhidharma is said to bring Buddhism to China. Buddhism is known for the Shaolin temple in China. In fact Shaolin practices both. Taoism is the yin and yang practice and Buddhism is the teaching of your own path to God. So both play major role in the Shoalin temple. Shoalin is most known to the people for martial arts.
