Germany did not want the Allies to receive armament, food, goods and supplies that were shipped to them. They sunk many merchant ships. War was waged by the naval forces of both sides. Eventually the Germans had to give up and the Allies were able to get their troops and supplies sent to all the necessary places, especially the United Kingdom.
In the 1940's Britain and Germany thought that they should only one Air-Force since they were almost one country. They fought to see who had the better Air-Force but ended up losing their best men. Although Britain had won Germany still disagrees on who should have the Air-Force.
Hitler (Germany) wanted to invade the UK and couldn't do it without first having air superiority: therefore the Luftwaffe was tasked to destroy the RAF.
(Although, even if the RAF had been destroyed it's dubious that any invasion fleet would have been able to reach England in any force due to the Royal Navy - at that time an overwhelmingly stronger force than the Kriegsmarine).
Great Britain did not want to be subjugated to Nazi rule. You see, the German's Luftwaffe began a vicious campaign to gain air superiority over England's Royal Air Force (RAF) during the summer and autumn of 1940. Germany's utter failure against (Great) Britain is not only considered to be it's first major defeat, but was also the crucial turning point of World War 2. With regard to The Few, the annals of history will long agree that "This was their finest hour."

Britain was attacked by the Axis powers, specifically Germany, during the Battle of Britain.
It was an air battle fought mainly over the Southern counties of England.
The German purpose of starting the Battle of Britain was to defect British Air Superiority as a pre-cursor to a land invasion.
That was actually called "the Battle of Britain". In July 1940 Britain had no forces left in continental Europe. The German Army and Luftwaffe had invaded Holland, Belgium and France. The Luftwaffe had about 2,000 bombers and some 2,600 fighters within range of Britain. The RAF had around 600 fighters for protection. -Hitler ordered the Luftwaffe to soften up Britain in preparation for an invasion. The assault started with ruthless, round the clock bombing raids on British towns, cities and factories, after a month these raids switched to RAF airfields. The RAF responded daily, losing many pilots and aircraft. One Squadron, 56 had 6 commanders in two months. More new pilots poured in fresh from training, more new Hurricanes and Spitfires arrived at squadrons every day. They shot down many German aircraft, helped by radar and individual tactics. - On the 15th September the Luftwaffe launched 2 massive bombing raids - 56 of their bombers were shot down, many were damaged. -On that day Hitler cancelled the invasion. -The RAF had won the first decisive battle of WW2 -The Battle of Britain.
