Number 1 cylinder, which would be the first cylinder on the drivers side of the engine. You want the rotor pointing towards the 5 O'Clock position looking at the distributor from the front.
Bring number one cylinder to top dead center. Make Sher you on the compression stroke. If not your 360 degrees off with you piston setting for tdc. Make Sher that the distributor rotor is pointing at number one wire on the cap. That should put you in time.
Look at the distributor and make a mark on the housing where the #1 cylinder connects. Then pull the distributor cap. The mark is so you know where #1 is with the cap off. Next, bring #1 cylinder to top dead center on the compression stroke. The rotor should be pointing at the mark you made. If you need directions on how to get #1 to TDC on the compression stroke - another topic..
The engine must be at top dead center (TDC) on the #1 cylinder. TDC is on the compression stroke. You are setting it on the exhaust stroke. Remove all spark plugs and slowly turn the engine over by hand. With your finger or a compression gage over the # 1 piston hole, when you feel or see compression you are on the compression stroke, Place a small wooden dowel rod about 8" long inside the #1 spark plug hole and touch the top of the piston. When the dowel moves to the top you are at TDC. Now set the distributor so the rotor is pointing to the # 1 spark plug connection.
You need to bring cylinder #1 to top dead center of the compression stroke. Then remove the distributor cap & see which post the rotor is pointing towards. Replace cap & place cylinder #1 plug wire to that post. Follow clockwise around the dist cap with cylinders 1.8.4.3.6.5.7.2
you need to bring cylinder 1 piston up to top dead center on compression stroke then turning the oil pump drive shaft so the distributor rotor faces #1 on the distributor cap.
Remove #1 cylinder sparkplug and roll up some paper towel OR a napkin in your fingers and stick it in the hole. Turn the engine over until it POPS out. You will hear it ! That will let you know your on the compression stroke. Bring it all the way to TDC. Use somthing like a screwdriver to stick in the hole to make shure your up at TDC. You then can set the distributer to point at the #1 cylinder. Then follow around your firing order. Make shure your timing marks are correct and that they meet each other at 12:00 for crank and 6:00 for camshaft. Hope this helps!
I believe the firing order is still 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2 on those V8 engines. (Check it out though to be sure). Using a compression gauge, bring the number 1 cylinder to top dead centre of the compression stroke. Now remove the distributor cap, and note where the rotor is pointing. put the cap back on and align it so that the number 1 plug wire on the distributor is. Cylinder 1 is ready to fire, so set the rest of your spark plug wires on the cap according to the firing order. and i wasn't too confusing. Greg
Pretty much except I would bring number one cylinder up on the compression stroke then line up TDC on the timing marks, remove cap, note position of distributor and rotor, then pull the distributor up and out, (note that rotor rotates a bit as the dist is removed). This way you have a reference point if something moves.
It could be any one of the contacts. When the distributor was put in, depending on what type of motor it is, number one could be anywhere. You will need to bring number one cylinder to top dead center on the compression stroke and see where the rotor is pointing. That will be number one and set the rest of the plugs from that.
take it around one more revolution, TDC is meant to be in the compression stroke and you may be in the exhaust stroke. if that does not help then you may need to remove the distributor and replace it in the right alignment.
here's a diagram of the wiring on it,you bring it up on no- 1 compression stroke and drop the distributor back in it,you have to make sure the crank shaft pulley mark is on no-1 top dead center, and use this diagram it should help you get this straitened out, good luck, the diagrams are at the bottom of the page,,http://www.aa1car.com/library/chevy_firi…
Bring the piston to top dead center on the compression stroke and align the index mark on the cam gear with the casting mark on the head located in the 12:00 o'clock position
