You will have alot of play in the steering wheel.
Too much play in the steering wheel, vehicle may wander.
Bad steering rack? Bad steering gear? Pitman arm?
Bad steering pump, low or no power steering fluid, binding in steering components such as the u-joints in the steering column, tie rods, or Pitman arm.
the answer is NO with the eception of some very unusual circumstance/accident
Simply replace them. Make sure the pitman arm is bad before replacing it.
Loose shock or strut mount? Bad ball joint? Worn tie rod end? Bad steering rack? Bad pitman arm?
Check the suspension and steering assembly for loose/worn parts, such as ball joints, tie rod ends, idler arm, pitman arm, steering stabilizer (if equipped), steering box, wheel bearings, shock absorbers, wheel balance, tires and wheels. Replace any bad parts and have the front end aligned.
yes, its called gear lash to prevent wear of the steering gears (just a little) the gears in the steering gear box almost never goes bad. jaybird 1980
It's either the alignment is off, or your brakes are grabbing, get it aligned (about $40) and have the brakes checked out. And in the future, don't just go replacing parts, have everything checked out first, because I'm sure you wasted money on an idler arm, those hardly ever go bad.
Steering will "wobble" at higher speeds and sometimes when braking. General looseness in steering.
You need to replace your tie rods, pitman arm and idler arm. I had the same problem and it went away. Cost me about $120.00
The fleet of vehicles where I work have many S10's and Sonoma's 2 wheel and 4 wheel drive. The front end steering and suspension parts I see wear out the most are the idler arm and pitman arm joints on both 2 wheel and 4 wheel drive. On the 4 wheel drive the lower ball joints wear out fast. I also see the upper control arm bushings on the drivers side go bad from the heat coming off the exhaust manifold.
