In Western Europe, the period from about AD500-700 is often called the Dark Ages. In fact from about AD410 onwards the western part of the empire was overrun by various group of barbarian invaders. The Eastern Empire fared better and under Emperor Justinian succeeded in reconquering some of areas lost by the Western Empire, including much of southern Italy, parts of North Africa and some areas of Gaul and Spain near the Mediterranean coast. However, they were unable to hold on to these areas for long.

The Western Roman Empire fell under the weight of the invasions by Germanic peoples. These Germanic peoples carved the empire. They formed their own kingdoms in former lands of the empire: the kingdom of the Vandals in north-western Africa, the kingdom of the Visigoths in Spain and Portugal, the kingdom of the Burgundians in eastern France and the kingdom of the Franks in Holland south of the river Rhine, Belgium Luxembourg and northern and central Gaul. The Alemanni took over north-eastern France, Switzerland and Austria.

The Eastern Roman Empire expelled the Vandals from northwest Africa and sent the Ostrogoths to invade Italy to depose a usurper there and to rule Italy on behalf of Zeno, the eastern Roman emperor. Later Italy was invaded by the Lombards.

Eventually the Franks took over the whole of France and the lands of the Alemanni, including their original homeland in southern Germany. Later the Franks expelled the Lombards for Italy, formed the Carolingian Empire and conquered the northwest of Spain and northern Germany. This empire covered Western Europe except for Denmark, the Scandinavian Peninsula and most of the Iberian Peninsula.

The Angles, Saxons, Jutes and Frisians migrated to Britain in waves and eventually took it over.
