The American Revolution was when the original 13 colonies became the independent United States of America, and the Civil war was when the noth part of the U.S. was fighting the south part of the U.S.
They were the same type of war. They were both wars where one group of people was fighting for their rights and against taxation without representation.
Neither one was technically a "civil war" where two groups fight to control one government. A separate country was desired in both cases.
The main differences, apart from all of the technological advances, were the oponents.
The American Revolution and the American Civil War were very similar in that in each, an underfunded, undermanned and undergunned underdog sought independence from what they felt was an oppressive regime.
There will be people who will claim the Civil War was fought over slavery, but that was just one of the issues. Lincoln himself said that if he could restore the Union without freeing a single slave, he would do it.
Prior to the American Revolution, the American colonies were having difficulties with the colonial overlords in London. The colonies were not allowed to import goods except through Great Britain, and at the price (and tax level) Great Britain dictated. Import goods could have been available at far cheaper prices had the colonists been allowed to import from other countries. Ultimately, the colonists grew so tired of being legally robbed of their wealth by Great Britain, that they took action to throw off the yoke of oppression. But, don't kid yourself - the rebel leaders of the colonies were wealthy men. It always takes wealth and men of wealth to fund a revolution. Poverty never causes a revolution and the poverty-stricken never revolt.
Fast forward 85 years. Prior to the Civil War, the southern states were having difficulties with the Treasury Department and bureaucrats in Washington. The southern states were allowed to import goods from foreign countries, but the tariffs on those goods (set by the federal government) made it cost-prohibitive to do so. So the southern states were forced to buy those same goods from the northern states, and since the federal government placed no onerous tariffs on the import of good that the southern states could produce (cotton, tobacco, etc.) the flow of capital was one way - out of the southern states and into the northern states. Ultimately, the southern states grew so tired of being legally robbed of their wealth by the federal government and the northern industrialists, that they took action to throw off the yoke of oppression.
The primary difference between the two is that no other nations came to the aid of the Confederacy as France did with the colonies. As such, the Confederacy lost. Incidentally, had the southern states delayed their secessions by as little as ten years, the outcome may have been quite different, as iron ore deposits were developed in Alabama, and coal mines were developed in Mississippi (the coal was not as good as in Pennsylvania, but it was plentiful). The creation of industry based on these two major Natural Resources would have dramatically changed the Confederacy's ability to wage defensive war.
Civil is when two clans or groups from the same city fight, revolutionary is when the whole city goes against the government.
The Civil War was the north half of America and the south half of American fighting against each other. The Revolutionary War was the colonists fighting against the British.
The revolutionary war was fighting for freedom against the British, but the civil war was brother against brother. It was an internal war between states.
The main difference between the American Civil War and the American Revolutionary War was that the Revolutionary War was fought between the British Empire and the American Colonies, the latter of which declared independence; and the "Civil War" was fought between the United States, and the Confederated States of America--two separate and distinct countries. So, in actuality, the "Civil War" was not a civil war, since it was a war between to countries.
No, the Revolutionary War was the American War of Independence (from Britain). The Civil War was the war between the Northern and Southern states (1861-1865).
The Revolutionary war lasted almost twice as long as the Civil war.
Because there are other countries that have had civil wars. The difference between Cilvil War and Revolutionary War is the ones who revolted won and the ones who were at Civil unrest lost the War. If the South had won the War, it would have been known as a second Revolutionary War or maybe The Confederate Uprising!
The American Revolutionary War began in 1775. The US Civil War began in 1861. Therefore the Revolutionary War was before the Civil War.
