Hi! another tip. I had the same problem on my 1996 when stepping on the gas it would die. However it wasn't leaking water into my optispark (distributor) it was the Idleling Air Control Valve. The next thing I would check for it would be the Trotle Body Position Sensor. Hope this helps!! Miguel
I would replace the fuel filter and check fuel pressure.
Inadequate fuel pressue probably. Check fuel pressure with proper gauge.
probably bad TPS, or IAC sensors
Replace the Fuel Filter. I had the same problem with my 87 Wrangler... For me it turned out to be fuel filter was clogged even though it was semi-new.
Dirty injectors.
If the boat idles fine and revs fine in neutral in the water and idles fine on the trailer, however has no power when you stick it into drive and give it some throttle a common problem with some of these early Mercury V6's is in the stator. The only way to fix this is to replace the stator.
If you give the car gas and it immediately dies but idles without giving the car gas, the VAF could be unplugged. If the car immediately dies without giving the car gas, it could have low fuel pressure, vaccum leaks, compression issues.
it could be security system. i had same issuse and strange as it sounds i disconnected the battery twice in two days nad no problem since. give it a try..
Replace the idle air control valve right below the throtle body this can be a very expensive part so go to a u pull it junk yard
