Use some heavy gloves or a set of insulated pliers to hold the spark plug wire about 1/4-inch from the engine block (ground) and crank the engine - you should see a spark jump from the wire to the engine ground. You can check for spark by removing the plug wire from the spark plug and holding it about 1/4 inch from ground. Have some one crank the engine or pull the starter rope and look for a spark to jump from the spark plug wire to ground. DO NOT hold the wire with your bare hands since you will get shocked. If you have spark there, remove the spark plug and insert it into the end of the spark plug wire and do the same procedure. If there is no spark, the plug is bad. If you have spark, the problem lies elsewhwere.
