1. It was the first time since Ghengis Khan, that an Eastern nation defeated a Western nation in war. 2. It eliminated Russia as a competitor in the East for the next 3 decades. 3. It brought Japan into competition with Western forces, as a military power. 4. The Battle of Tsushima (May '05) was history's only decisive (modern) battleship fleet action ever fought; which enabled Japan to capitalize on future warship designs, as well as tactics & strategy. 5. The war also taught Japan, not to war with Russia; which had an earth shaking result for Nazi Germany in WW2. Germany wanted Japan to attack Russia (USSR then), in return for Hitler's declaration of war against the US after the Pearl Harbor attack (Hitler declared war on 11 December 1941). Japan ignored opening a second front on the Soviet Union. As a result, the German Army had to face millions of Soviet troops from the USSR's east.

The war damaged the Czar's prestige, and contributed to the instability that led to revolution in 1905, and more importantly to the Bolshevik revolution during World War I, that created the Soviet Union.

The Japanese occupation of Korea and Manchuria began the period of Japanese Imperialism which culminated in the Sino-Japanese War of 1937 and then World War II in the Pacific beginning in 1941.

The war validated the concept of the all-big-gun battleship, which led to the launching of Britain's HMS Dreadnought in 1906. The Washington Naval Treaty of 1922 temporarily limited Japan's navy until 1936 but allowed them a close parity with the US and Britain.

One particular battle: Battle of Tsushima (sometimes referred to as the Battle of the Japan Sea) fought on 27 May 1905. This battle, which had British naval officers (observers) on board the Japanese battleships, settled the issue of speed and big guns (over mixed batteries) during fleet actions.

Reports compiled from the British observers were dispatched to England, whereupon Whitehall approved the laying of the keel of HMS Dreadnaught; which commenced on October 1905.

Upon HMS Dreadnaught's launching in 1906, the world commenced a new naval arm's race, which culminated into World War One in 1914.

Most historians like to decoy the student to the over worked phrase, "...it was the first war in which an Asian nation defeated a European one...". Not correct; Ghengis Khan defeated European Armies long before the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-1905.

The real reason the Russo-Japanese War was important is because of one battle during the war; the Battle of Tsushima fought on 27 May 1905 which validated the all big gunned (12" at the time) battleship and proved that battleship speed was a major component of battleship warfare. The after action reports, written by British naval officers, went to Whitehall in Great Britain, where they were studied; thus approving the laying of the keel of the HMS Dreadnaught in October 1905 (four months after the sea battle at Tsushima).

HMS Dreadnaught was launched in 1906, creating a new Naval Arm's Race which ultimately led to World War I.

Other than the usual, "newly industrialized power", etc. The primary importance of the war was the testing and validation of the new modern steel battleships. All steel battleships had only existed for about 24 years prior to the Russo-Japanese War...and none of them had been tested in combat (battleship fleet vs battleship fleet).

During the Battle of Tsushima (aka Battle of the Japan Sea) on 27 May 1905, uniform large guns (12") and high speeds dictated victory over defeat. British Naval Officers appointed duty as official observers, and stationed aboard Japanese battleships during the sea engagement, wrote after action reports and submitted them to London. Upon completion of the reviews, authority was given to lay the keel of HMS Dreadnaught on October 1905. When Britain launched HMS Dreadnaught in 1906, a new naval arm's race was started, which culminated with World War One in 1914.

It was a very unlucky war for Russia. Japan was saved through the intervention of the USA. Teddy Roosevelt liked Japan as a foil for Russia, and he helped it end the war it could not have won. The Russians finally had gotten their act (and the Siberian railroad) together and would have defeated the Japanese except for the "peace" efforts of TR. What was funny was that the Japanese government at the time was relatively moderate compared to the ones that followed, and it could not reveal to the Japanese public that Japan's war effort was nearing collapse. It would have destroyed its negotiating power at Portsmouth. So the Japanese public was enraged at the liberal terms that the Japanese offered the Russians and the road was paved in Japan for the rise of militarist governments.

The Russian government was also discredited in the eyes of its people and the "first" Russian revolution, the 1905 Revolution, took place. Tsarism was on its last legs until it finally perished in 1917.

Teddy Roosevelt liked dealing with the Japanese and his emissary, Robert Taft, made a secret agreement with a Japanese diplomat named Katsura which "gave" Manchuria and Korea to Japan and the Philippines to the USA.

This only fell apart after 1937 when Japan invaded China proper, beyond Manchuria. Before that the USA did not have any real problems with Japan's actions in East Asia.
