∙ 12y agoThere are two version why Germany attacked the Sowjet Union.
1.) The official (Nazi) version: It was an pre-emptive war, because the russian army gathered their troops at the German-Russian border. Also the Reichsgovernment told the germans, that the arian race needs new living space in the East ("Lebensraum im Osten") and therefore the russian "subhuman beings" should be eliminated.
2.) The historical version: War is expensive. With German troops occupyed most of Europe and parts of northern Africa, we simply needed more ressources to supply the Army and the homeland. Especially we had vested interests in the Ukraine, which has been called the "breadbasket" of Europe and in the oil-fields of Baku in Azerbaidzhan, where we planned to get our fuel from to continue or expend the war.
Also Hitler and the government needed an atmosphere of fear and constant threat to legitimate the domestic political changes in the homeland.
