1. The Iraq-Iran War of 1980-1988 may have established Iraq as a more powerful nation in that region; since they bettered Iran during that conflict. 2. Operation Desert Storm (Jan/Feb 1991) effectively removed Iraq from influencing the oil reserves maintained in Kuwait, since Iraq was ejected from that region. 3. Operation Iraqi Freedom (2003- ) removed Saddam from power in Iraq; but caused disruption in the quality of law, order and stability in that region. Saddam may have been a brutal dictator, but he did maintain stability in that area.
The 1991 Gulf War forced Iraq back out of Kuwait, which it had invaded, and enforced sanctions on the regime of Saddam Hussein. The hostilities between the US and Iraq led to an increased American presence in the Middle East, upon which most of the world depends for oil.
The nation (US) was elated! The US Postal Service authorized a new US postage stamp in it's honor: With the words "Operation Desert Shield & Desert Storm", upon the image of a US Military medal. Parades were held in major US cities, and old anti-war activists like Jane Fonda, etc. were giving public apologies for their past behaviors.
President Bush Sr. made a public speech, "...America is united again; we have beat the Vietnam Syndrome!"
History really does repeat itself: In 1898 a similar event happened. Returning US troops marched to parades and the newspapers claimed that the Spanish-American War had re-united the American people again from the after effects of the US Civil War.
Both DS and the SA War were nicknamed the "100 Hour War" and "Splendid Little War" respectively. Desert Storm lasted about 45 days with about 146 combat fatalities; SA War lasted 6 months with about 385 men killed in action. Both DS & SAW occurred in the 90's & both conflicts claimed to have healed a nation's wounds that occurred in the '60s (with the added coincidence, both the Civil War and Vietnam War were UNDECLARED wars).
This was stressful on all the service men and women who had to fight in it. The economy was stressed and people at home were stressed by this conflict.

No. The term Desert Storm comes from the name of the main offensive, codenamed Operation Desert Storm. So Desert Storm was just the name of the first offensive action carried out by the Coalition forces during the Gulf War. People use the term gulf war because it is easier to say and easier to remember. It's also easier to SPELL. But for historical accuracy: 1. Iran-Iraq War (1980-1988) 2. Operation Desert Storm (January and February 1991) 3. Operation Iraqi Freedom (2003 to present)
