  • Many died and World War 2 began for the U.S. The war had already started. Also, Japanese-Americans were put in concentration camps because they were known to be spying for Japan. The result of the attack on Pearl Harbor was... the USS Oklahoma, USS Utah, and USS Arizona were sunk. Between those 3 - within 15 minutes.. we had lost approximately 1800 soldiers. We lost 2,403 Americans that day including 68 civilians.
  • It also was one of those defining moments when Americans from coast to coast stood up and refused to be ignored. Within 24 hours the recruiting offices all across the country were open with lines stretching for blocks. By attacking Americans on American soil, the public refused to take it lying down. Anyone who was able signed up to serve in the war.
  • Congress declared war on Japan.

The attack brought the US into World War II, fighting both Japan and Germany (which declared war on the US according to the Tripartite Pact of 1940).

The American people rallied behind the war effort, which not incidentally brought a final end to the Great Depression. The industrial might of the US meant total defeat to Japan, which had not been able to fully exploit the resources it had captured in Asia.

A social result was the demonization of the Japanese in the US, which was already rife with prejudice against Asians. More than 110,000 Japanese-Americans were removed from their homes on the west coast and sent to desert internment camps for most of the war.

The initial results of the attack were approximately 2,000 American deaths and the sinking of US battleships. Most were repaired and returned to service. Without them, the US had to adapt to using its aircraft carriers as Japan had. Seven months later, four of the Japanese carriers that attacked Pearl Harbor were sunk at the Battle of Midway, and the other two later in the war.

The result was the loss of the majority of the Pacific fleet except for the aircraft carriers which fortunately for America had been out to sea that day. The Japanese were tempted to postpone the attack because of this, but ulimately decided it was worth it anyway. The attack made it so America had to spend a good 2 years trying to regroup in order to put up a reasonable fight against the Japanese. It also caused America to seek an absolute surrender rather than a peace treaty.

The attack on Pearl Harbor was a surprise attack against the United States' naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii by the Japanese navy, on the morning of Sunday, December 7, 1941 resulting in the United States becoming involved in World War II. It was intended as a preventive action to remove the US Pacific Fleet as a factor in the war Japan was about to start against Britain, the Netherlands, and The United States. Two aerial attack waves, totaling 353[4] aircraft, launched from six Japanese aircraft carriers, intending to reduce or eliminate United States' military power in the Pacific. The attack wrecked two U.S. Navy battleships, one minelayer, and two destroyers beyond repair, and destroyed 188 aircraft; personnel losses were 2,388 killed and 1,178 wounded. Damaged warships included three cruisers, a destroyer, and six battleships (one deliberately grounded, later refloated and repaired; two sunk at their berths, later raised, repaired, and eventually restored to Fleet service). Vital fuel storage, shipyard, maintenance, and headquarters facilities were not hit. Japanese losses were minimal, at 29 aircraft and five midget submarines, with 65 servicemen killed or wounded. The intent of the strike was to protect Imperial Japan's advance into Malaya and the Dutch East Indies - for their Natural Resources such as oil and rubber - by neutralizing the U.S. Pacific Fleet. Both the U.S. and Japan had long-standing contingency plans for war in the Pacific, continuously updated as tension between the two countries steadily increased during the 1930s. Japan's expansion into Manchuria and French Indochina were greeted with steadily increasing levels of embargoes and sanctions by the United States and others. In 1940, under the Export Control Act, the U.S. halted shipments of airplanes, parts, machine tools, and aviation gas, which Japan saw as an unfriendly act.[5] Nevertheless, the U.S. continued to export oil to Japan, in part because it was understood in Washington cutting off oil exports would be an extreme step, given Japanese dependence on U.S. oil exports,[6][7] likely to be taken as a provocation by Japan. In the summer of 1941, after Japanese expansion into French Indochina, the U.S. ceased oil exports to Japan, in part because American restrictions on internal oil use were beginning.[8] President Franklin D. Roosevelt had earlier moved the Pacific Fleet to Hawaii and ordered a buildup in the Philippines, hoping to deter Japanese aggression in the Far East. The Japanese high command was certain an attack on the United Kingdom's colonies would bring the U.S. into the war,[9] so a preventive strike appeared to be the only way[9] Japan could avoid U.S. interference in the Pacific.[10] The attack was one of the most important engagements of World War II. Occurring as it did before a formal declaration of war, it pushed U.S. public opinion from isolationism to an acceptance war was unavoidable, as Roosevelt called December 7, 1941 "… a date which will live in infamy."

The United States declared war on Japan and in response Germany declared war on the United States. They were allies with Japan and this began the US involvement in WW2. Thus, the US fought Japan in the Pacific and Germany in Europe.

That would be a very complex answer. The MAIN thing it did was thrust America into WWII. We declared war on Germany and Japan.
