Aims were largely nationalistic. It was the time of the Italian Wars when many countries in Europe were locked in an almost constant struggle with one another for territory, but with the greater aim of appearing to be superior powers. To conquer a new land, make their people your subjects, and to gain all of the new knowledge that the New World could bring (about flora, fauna and the nature of humanity and our relationship with God) would be to assert the superiority of a nation very strongly. There was also a religious angle in this.

The Holy Roman Empire portrayed themselves as God's chosen nation, with the Emperor standing above all other European rulers. Most of these rulers felt that to conquer new, non-Christian nations, and to convert them to Christianity, would be to do a great service to God, and again to assert that nation's supremacy within Christendom.

The basis of European explorations were to find new undeveloped places where they could establish colonies and take advantage of the Natural Resources that were found in these underdeveloped places. They also made explorations to chart and map out new areas on the earth. This would be of general benefit to them, but also allow them to have a military advantage over other nations that did not accurate information to help their logistics or their military planning.
