Actually it does help to remove it. Just did this on my 96 Windstar. Visit Autozone, and pick up the socket for the oil pressure switch(runs $5.99 here in NV). It will make removing and installing so much easier. Also, while at Autozone, ask about the removal kit for the pulley on the Power Steering pump. If you don't want the hassle of doing it yourself, the $93 that was charged is not bad. I chose not to, as they wanted $1200 for repairs that I have done for $400. Good luck with whatever you choose!
The oil pressure sending unit is located on the engine block, under the power steering pump. It is only accessible after the steering pump has been removed.

On the 4.0 L OHV engine, the oil pressure sending unit is on the driver's side of the engine, located below the power steering pump.
I believe the oil pressure sending unit for the oil pressure gauge is located on the drivers side of the engine , below the power steering pump ( 4.0 L - OHV - 6 cylinder )

It's located under the power steering pump. In order to get to it you have to take the power steering pump off.
In a really stupid place. It is sticking out of the side of the timing cover right below the power steering pump bracket. It is really fun to try to get at.
