In the US? On December 18, 1865 when the 13th Amendment was ratified.
Slavery outlawed in America.In America....
After the battle of Antietam in 1862, President Lincoln created the Emancipation Proclamation. It freed the slaves ONLY in the rebelling states, also known as the Confederate States Of America. This did not outlaw slavery in the bordering states, or in the north.
As the Confederate States of America had actually secceeded from the union, that law didn't neccessarily apply. It was more or less an attempt to keep the British from giving aid to the South. The British could not support a war that was being fought for slavery, and the Emancipation Procalamation made the North seem morally justified in fighting the newly created Confederacy.
After the war, the 13th Amendment was drafted officially outlawing slavery. The 14th and 15th Amendments were added giving freed slaves(blacks) equal rights and equal protection under the law. This was not fully enforced until after the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960's. This proves that Northerners were racist as well, and that the war was not fought for the sole purpose of abolishing slavery and giving blacks equal opportunities.
Er..., I'm trying to find out about slave trades in Zambia, anyone know anything about that??

It was only the international slave trade which was banned after 1808. After that time it was illegal to import any new slaves from Africa. Domestic slave trading, within the US, was still perfectly legal. All children born to slave mothers were also slaves, so there was a source of more slaves in this natural increase. Some illegal importation also continued. Men in this trade, called "blackbirders", often landed slaves in Mexico or Texas. Texas did not become a part of the US until 1845. From Mexico or Texas the illegally imported slaves could be brought overland into the US.
Portugal was the first nation to both start and end their slave trading.

They purchased them from other tribes that captured the slaves for them. Europeans almost never captured their own slaves. They established trading arrangements with powerful African kingdoms. These powerful African groups did virtually all of the kidnapping and capturing, and sold the captives to European slavers at established slave trading ports on the coast. In East Africa the Arabs did most of the slave trading.

The Portuguese slave trade in Africa developed through the establishment of trading posts along the West African coast in the 15th century. They initially traded goods for enslaved Africans captured by local African rulers. As demand for enslaved labor in the Americas increased, the Portuguese expanded their trading networks and began raiding inland communities for slaves.
Arabian and African societies were involved in slave trading in Africa before Europeans. Arab merchants conducted a significant portion of the trans-Saharan slave trade, while African kingdoms such as the Kingdom of Benin and the Kingdom of Dahomey participated in capturing and selling slaves.

However, it's important to note that despite the laws, illegal slave trading continued in some regions for many years thereafter.
