In the US? On December 18, 1865 when the 13th Amendment was ratified.

Slavery outlawed in America.

In America....

After the battle of Antietam in 1862, President Lincoln created the Emancipation Proclamation. It freed the slaves ONLY in the rebelling states, also known as the Confederate States Of America. This did not outlaw slavery in the bordering states, or in the north.

As the Confederate States of America had actually secceeded from the union, that law didn't neccessarily apply. It was more or less an attempt to keep the British from giving aid to the South. The British could not support a war that was being fought for slavery, and the Emancipation Procalamation made the North seem morally justified in fighting the newly created Confederacy.

After the war, the 13th Amendment was drafted officially outlawing slavery. The 14th and 15th Amendments were added giving freed slaves(blacks) equal rights and equal protection under the law. This was not fully enforced until after the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960's. This proves that Northerners were racist as well, and that the war was not fought for the sole purpose of abolishing slavery and giving blacks equal opportunities.

Er..., I'm trying to find out about slave trades in Zambia, anyone know anything about that??

Slavery was outlawed in the United States in stages:

  1. Many northern states outlawed it (mostly by adopting gradual emancipation laws), some as early as the 1780s
  2. In 1862 Congress passed & Lincoln signed legislation ending slavery in the District of Columbia (and providing for federal financial remuneration to slave owners)
  3. The Emancipation Proclamation (not legislation, but an Executive order by Lincoln), first announced on Sept 22, 1862, and finally put into effect beginning January 1, 1863, declared immediately free ALL slaves in states or parts of states then in rebellion (i.e., most of the Confederacy)... This was gradually carried out over the next two years as Union armies took control of Confederate territory
  4. The 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution - proposed by Congress in January 1865, ratified by enough states to go into effect by December 1865 - finally made slavery illegal throughout the United States

put

4) The 13th amendment to the Constitution (proposed by the U.S. Congress in January 1865, successfully ratified by enough states by December 1865), finally made slavery illegal in ALL states.

4) The 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution - proposed by Congress in January 1865, ratified by enough states to go into effect by December 1865 - finally made slavery illegal throughout the United States

What year did slave trades become illegal?

The transatlantic slave trade was abolished in the 19th century, with most countries passing laws to prohibit the trade by the mid-1800s. For example, the United States officially outlawed the importation of slaves in 1808. However, it's important to note that despite the laws, illegal slave trading continued in some regions for many years thereafter.

If the slave trade was banned in the US how did slavery still thrive?

It was only the international slave trade which was banned after 1808. After that time it was illegal to import any new slaves from Africa. Domestic slave trading, within the US, was still perfectly legal. All children born to slave mothers were also slaves, so there was a source of more slaves in this natural increase. Some illegal importation also continued. Men in this trade, called "blackbirders", often landed slaves in Mexico or Texas. Texas did not become a part of the US until 1845. From Mexico or Texas the illegally imported slaves could be brought overland into the US.
