Cattle drives originated from where cattle were first domesticated, which was in and around Egypt, Middle Eastern countries, and into Spain, well before cattle were first introduced into the New World in the late 1400's.

Cattle originally evolved in the Indian subcontinent and were likely domesticated there. As humans spread out across Asia and Europe, cattle were brought along with the migrating humans and bred to adapt to the new environment.

The first imports of cattle to the New World came from Spain. Other imports came from other European countries like England, Scotland, the Netherlands, Germany, France, Belgium, Ireland, Switzerland, etc. India also imported several breeds which were responsible for the "creation" of the American Brahman breed.
