The Mormons or The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, has expanded all over the world. As of December 31, 2004, there are 12,275,822 members over all continents, 51,067 full-time Missionaries, 26,670 churches, and a total of 119 Temples in operation. What an amazing expansion since the LDS Church has been formed by Joseph Smith in 1830. I hope that's what you meant by "expand" and that this helps. For further info visit www.mormon.org
The first expansion of the LDS Church was to England and then the Pacific islands, particularly Polynesia, Tonga, and Australia.
"Mormon" does not refer to any number of the other groups that were formed following Joseph Smith's death. The Associated Press Stylebook notes: "The term Mormon is not properly applied to the other ... churches that resulted from the split after [Joseph] Smith's death." These include the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints which is based in Independence, Missouri. Other groups have been based in Michigan, Utah, and elsewhere. Of these other sects, the RLDS (now known as Community of Christ) is the largest and they are all world-wide.
Mormons settled in Utah. that is why there are a ton a Mormons there. there also alot in Idaho
They also settled in Nauvoo but the temple there was burned.
The Mormons colonized an area stretching from southern Alberta, Canada to northern Mexico, and from parts of what is now Colorado and New Mexico in the East to California and Nevada in the West, including parts of what are now Arizona and Idaho, and all of what is now Utah.
Today, Mormons are found in most countries, and every state of the United States.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (commonly called the "Mormons") began in Palmyra, New York. They then moved to Kirtland, Ohio, then Jackson County, Missouri, then Nauvoo, Illinois, then to Salt Lake City, Utah. For several decades, Church members from all over the world moved to Salt Lake City. Church leaders now ask Church members to stay in their home countries and build up the Church there.
Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the "Mormon" church) first migrated when Church headquarters changed locations from New York to Ohio in 1831. Church headquarters moved again several times due to persecution, and the majority of church members followed. These moves were to Missouri, Illinois, and Salt Lake City. Mass migration of Mormons to live near Church Headquarters came to a stop around 1900, when Church leaders began encouraging members to stay in their native nations or towns and build up the Church there, rather than come to a central location.
When the United States expanded west to include Utah Territory, the Mormons were forced to rejoin the United States, the country they fleed only a few years before due to intolerance and persecution. They were also forced to give up the practice of polygamy and give much of their land to the government.
The Mormons traveled in covered wagons or with handcarts on the Mormon trail to the salt lake valley in Utah.
