In Richard H. Garrett's barn. Garrett's farm was in Caroline County, Virginia, about eight miles south of Port Royal. Union troop set fire to Garrett's barn, to smoke Booth out of hiding. A trooper named Boston Corbett crept close to the barn and spotted Booth through a gap in the logs of the side of the barn. Firing against orders, Corbett shot Booth in the neck. Booth was removed from the barn and died on Garrett's front porch. He was paralyzed by the shot and asked that his hands be held up so he could see them, after which he uttered his alleged last words, "Useless, useless" and then died.

What used to be Garrett's farm is now a part of the reservation of the US Army's Fort A. P. Hill. US Highway 301 crosses the reservation, but is fenced in and departing from the road into the surrounding woodland is not allowed. The location of Garrett's farm is marked by a state historical marker on the side of US 301.
