There were 3,953,000 slaves in the US in the 1860 census, mostly in the southern and border states. (Border states include slave states of Maryland, Delaware, Kentucky and Missouri.) The state with the largest number of slaves was Virginia with 491,000 slaves (free population of 1,105,000). Next were: Georgia (462,000) Mississippi (437,000)

Alabama (435,000)

South Carolina (402,000) In Mississippi and South Carolina, the slave population significantly exceeded the free population.

There were none in New England or the middle states of New York, New Jersey or Pennsylvania. There were none in the far western states or the middle western states with the exceptions of Nebraska and Utah, which had less than 50 between them.
