Worn clutch packs or bad valve body. Possibly solenoid. Transmission needs service.
Automatic or manual trans? What am I missing here? Explain! If it is stuck in 3rd gear then it is obvious that it can't go in reverse.
specify "not go into drive" does that mean it stalls or?
Park Reverse Neutral Drive 3rd gear 2nd gear Low gear
1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th & Reverse gear
There is no drive in a standard transmission car. In most cases you will have reverse, neutral, 1st gear, 2nd gear, 3rd gear, 4th gear, and 5th gear.
It stands for: Park=P Reverse=R Neutral=N Drive=D 1=1st gear 2=2nd gear 3=3rd gear
Reduction ratios: 1st gear 2.45:1 2nd gear 1.45:1 3rd gear 1:1 Overdrive 0.69:1 Reverse 2.22.1
check your transmission fluid when the car is running
The input sunshell splines have stripped or the hub has broken off. This will give you 1st + 3rd gears only with no reverse, 2nd, or 4th gear.
From page 46 of a 1966 Volkswagen Owners Manual, the gear ratios are: 1st gear 3.80:1 2nd gear 2.06: 1 3rd gear 1.26:1 4th gear 0.89:1 Reverse 3.88: 1
