I had the same problem with my '97. It took me awhile but I finally figured out that You have to loosen the inside trim panel (left inside panel) by removing the screws then pull out the panel just far enough to squeeze your hand behind it and then you can feel around for the locking mechanism rod and work it manually.Be careful not to pull the plastic trim too far out or you'll break the side that's still connected behind the hinge side.
Here's is some basic step by step instructions to replace the back door on Chevy Astro Vans 1992-2001 models. (when the door is shut and the handle broke)
1) previous answer suggest loosening the inside trim.
a) the three bottom screws on the inside trim near the floor need to be removed or loosened first.
b) the three "Star" screws holding the window to the door need to be removed
2) Carefully 'pop' and pull the inside panel from the door
a) don't worry the connectors are straight so horizontally will do
b) the top two connectors above the window don't mess with. you will probably break them and don't need to 'popped' to loosen the inside trim.
3) carefully reach inside the panel near the top above the silver brace bar.
a) lift up on the locking mechanism to unlock the door. it will stay in place once done.
b) push down on the door handle mechanism and carefully push the door open.
4) once the door is open. remove the 4 screws and the side panel to access the door handle region.
a) remove the hex washer nuts from the door handle
b) detach the silver metal bar horizontally from the handle
c) seat the new handle.
d) tighten the hex washer nuts down on the handle
e) re-attach the silver metal bar into the new handle
5) put the door back together with the inside panel
6) try the door a couple times so that it works
7) reattach the black side panel and you're done
I've done this 3 times on Astro Van door handles and this time it took 18 minutes! yeah.
my hatch handle is broke
The only way is to remove the inside door panel (not an easy job with the door closed). Once the panel is removed, you'll have access to the latch mechanism. You will be having to remove this panel to put a new door handle on anyway.
I would find a replacement in a salvage yard and replace the handle. Or replace with door poppers
pull the shaft
Replace the handle. You will need to remove the door panel to replace the handle. If you can't do this yourself take it to the dealer. They should charge you about 1.0 to 2.0 hours labor to do this, plus the part.
I broke my key in the ignition and cant get it out. My only option I can see, is to replace to tumbler. How do I remove it?
You have to replace the parking brake handle assembly.
get a sledge hammer and beat it to little pieces and pick them up and replace them with ones that r not broke. I need the answer myself.
The plastic on the inner handle has broke. One of the plastic gears just replace the actual handle (hard to find) get at a junk yard.
Take off the door panel. the plastic clip that holds the metal rod to the door handle came off or broke off. replace it.
You need to replace the guide roller located on the lower portion of the door. The plastic roller probably dried out and broke off.
I have a Chevy Cavelier - year 2000. My timing belt broke at 172,000 with no warning. It was a belt though, not a timing chain.
