∙ 2015-07-15 21:24:19FIRST,you remove the battery cables from the battery. Then you slide under the passenger side of the car and look UP. There will be 2 bolts holding the starter to the side of the flywheel. It is about 25 lbs. so be ready when you get the bolts out. Lots of folks MASH fingers doing this. Be CAREFUL.
you also have to remove the torque converter cover. but its no big deal . its just a thin piece of sheet metal.. and just 4 bolts.

The 1987 Chevrolet Caprice starter can be found on the right hand side of the engine. The starter will be at the back of the engine, near the bottom.
Under the passenger side of the engine, at the rear.
Start by removing the battery connection and then locate the starter near the ignition. Locate the starter between the transaxle and the engine. Unplug the wires and unwrench the starter. Replace with the new one.
If it is a -TBI- then the pump is mounted in the gas tank, but if it has a -4bbl- then it should be mounted on the engine block passenger side.
