∙ 11y agoDisconnect the wire.
Screw out the old one.
Screw in the new one.
Connect the wire.
If you don't use the special socket to fit over the sending unit you risk damaging the unit. Also do not over tighten the unit, it has 1/8" pipe thread and requires a little thread sealant and only snug it up.

∙ 11y agomost fuel sending unit are coneccted to the fuel pump on the top of the gas tank the gas tank needs to be takin out completely the sending unit/fuel pump is at the top of the tank it is a complete unit. You will need another new gasket when replacing the old one with the new one Or if need be you can buy Gasket maker from you local auto parts store less exspensive yet time consuming

∙ 15y agoThe oil sending unit is located behind the distributor. It looks like a a little can about the size of baby food jar. It has one wire coming from the top of it.

You can pull the transmission or engine, witch ever you think would be the easyest for you. But you have to remove one of them to replace the rear main. It is a 1 piece seal and it drives over the back of the crankshaft.
It will take and experience mechanic six hours to replace your 1996 Chevy truck flywheel. A novice mechanic will take several more hours.

In most cases it's the sending unit in the gas tank at fault. It would require dropping the gas tank to replace the sending unit.
Most of the time, the fuel gauge is not the problem. The problem rests with the sending unit in the fuel tank. To fix it, you must replace the sending unit. This is done in different ways depending on the position of the tank in your particular truck.
