North Korea, along with any other country which defeats or blocks the US from attaining its military goals is always attacked economically. Until China, Russia, Brazil and India can set up an alternative to the "Petro-Dollar" (US buck), many small nations can easily be contained by enforcing grinding poverty or, alternately for those sides who supported the US, brought to a high level of development by means of massive investment by nations and corporations 'friendly' to the US.
North Korea is a military Dictatorship. They invest most of their money into the military.
South Korea's government is structured very much like the USA.
In reality it's because North Korea was "adopted" by the Soviet Union and South Korea was "guided" by the US.
North Korea practices a trade policy of autarky, which is defined as being completely self-sufficient, as a country, in the production of goods and services. North Korea is a perfect example of why attempting autarky in a modern economy is completely nonsensical. No country can provide all of the types of raw materials and foodstuffs necessary to sustain the levels of population and industrial production prevalent in any modern society. As a result of autarky, the country remains in grinding poverty.
Contrary to the position in the Community Answer, which ignores the strength of a number of economies in countries not terribly friendly to the USA, like Saudi Arabia, Russia, China, Nigeria, Brazil, and Vietnam, North Korea's economic failures are almost entirely self-imposed. If North Korea embraced a form of international trade that mirrors China and Vietnam, they would be as successful as China or Vietnam.
It is a complicated issue which takes in very many trust issues. As much as the Soviet Union fell apart because of military spending, so also do the nations that used to receive support from that entity. Distrust between different Governments creates a paranoia that results in spending on things which are believed by those nations to be of most concern. The fear of global communism has made countries such as the U.S. increase their spending in defense of this fear and by doing so countries such as North Korea spent more on their defense towards capitalism. Sanctions against these less predominant nations has inhibited their ability to compete in technology in their military spending. To offset this they spend more in production of arms and therefore take from the general society funds needed to provide social well being within their own population. Where the United States spends billions in technology for military technology, the North Korean government spends most on mass of weapons to offset their deficit in technology which is created by the sanctions against them and the lack of support from other communist countries. Keep in mind that the United States even though it spends more in it's own military cannot back up a lot of it's own spending but isn't sanctioned by other nations. This allows the U.S to increase the attack financially on countries such as North Korea therefore forcing North Korea to spend more in mass production. In the U. S it is called war by attrition where you make it futile to resist foreign influence especially in defense spending! Without backing from countries such as the former Soviet Union or China, North Korea is left to spend more on it's defense system than what it spends on it's social economic needs. This however doesn't mean that there is no limitation on U. S defense spending because taking for example what befell the Soviet government, the U.S as well can over spend and begin removing funds from it's own social structure and economically create it's own demise out of the pursuit of trying appose countries that don't align themselves with U.S policies or standards.
Yes, North Korea has problems with mass starvation whilst the South have a steady running economy
NO. North Korea is one of the poorest countries on Earth. In the 1990s, its food production was so low that over a million people died of starvation.
North Korea or South Korea?
29% are below peverty level in North Korea
No! North Korea's currency is the wŏn. This is its sign: ₩
There is no such country as "Korea".There are North Korea and South Korea.North Korea -Recently due to the flooding in North Korea (in 2012), the UK sent emergency food and medical supplies to those caught in the flooding.North Korea is actually hostile to the UK and is one of the UK's most dangerous enemies. The UK would have preferred to not aid North Korea at all, but it has not choice because, as a member of NATO, the UK pledges to support disaster victims globally.South Korea -South Korea are one of the UK's closest allies. The UK aids the South Koreans by trading weapons, ammunition and military vehicles to so South Korea can defend themselves against the hostile North Korea.South Korea and the UK also exchange intelligence on North Korea for the security of both their countries.
north-Korea is a truly poor country and it is ruled by a dictatorial regime.
North Korea has a poor quality of life and poor material wealth. They have a poor quality of life because North Korea doesn't have a balance between material wealth and non-material wealth. In fact, kids play in north Korea in the middle of the highway because it is so empty. that's dangerous because occasionally, cars from the government will speed down the highway.
No. You're thinking of North Korea
what are you talking about? I think you're confusing north Korea with south Korea. north Korean people are poor and hungry. south Korea is one of top 5% economic superpowers in the world.
nothing, just that north Korea, and south Korea, were separted, so the north Koreans, can't watch our tv. or south Korea tv. they die in streets, poor people but south Korea they are pretty rich.
South Korea is Rich. The country is a developed country. (North Korea is very, very poor because of its style and history of government).
Yes It is, Shame on them! Hahahaha! South Korea is the rich one, Since Communism spread throughout north korea, They took one deep dive.
No truly poor country has nuclear weapons (with the possible exception of North Korea).
well north Korea have made nuclear bombs however the country is a very poor country. the soldiers are very short and if they fight against south Korean soldiers it would be a diadvantage for the north Korean. in order to bomb south Korea with nuclear bomb they need planes to drop the bomb but they are so poor that they can move the plane once. also how on earth are they going to feed the soldiers during the war if they are so poor. they have bad missile accuracy so they would lose. North Korea trains the soldiers really hard but their low height would have big disadvantages on them. South Korea are far wealthier country and the country has help from the un especially from USA. Korea's soldiers are taller with bigger and tougher bodies. South Korea has weapons as well like tanks. south Korea is very good at making ships so this would be a big advantage. If the two koreas have war south Korea will get some damage but the victory would be in the south Korean's hands. North Korea has stronger army but would not able to beat south Korea in the war.
They produce corn and rice and since they are a communist country the have a more poor economy than South Korea.
it's stupid question, you're asking for is America a country? yes, of course it is.
Kaesong is a city in the DPRK (North Korea), so relative to North Korea, Kaesong is within it. From the position of South Korea, Kaesong is to its north northwest.
