Why are people against Mitt Romney because he's a Mormon?
Because they listen to rumors and don't find out for themselves what he believes in. JFK was catholic, so what? It is illegal to not allow a religious person to run for office. Everyone has their beliefs of some sort. Remember.... By their fruits you will know them. I was horrified when I saw that guy refuse to shake Mr. Romney's hand back during the primaries. Talk about a bigot! But no one talks about the bigotry towards members of Mitt Romney's church. It has always been that way, why? People in general-when uneducated regarding a certain subject is what causes bigotry. Get educated, search it out for yourselves. People are not perfect but different belief systems should always be respected.
As with any member of a religion, it is foolish (and bigoted) to simply hate/dislike that member because they claim to follow it.
However, and this applies in particular to those running for public office where they will be responsible for creating and/or enforcing policy upon others (most who will NOT belong to that candidate's religion), it is perfectly proper to question the candidate about particular tenets of their religion and how that candidate would apply those tenets when in office.
That is, it's perfectly OK to ask questions like "You're religion does not believe in pre-marital sex. How do you propose to run sex education programs in the public schools?" However, it is NOT acceptable to state "I won't support Candidate X because his religion believes in <some idea>", without finding out how the Candidate views that particular tenet, AND how that belief would affect his/her public policy stance.
It's a fine line to walk, but remember, the CORRECT thing to do is ask about how the candidate would apply some belief of his/her religion in the public sphere. And, it's entirely reasonable for that candidate to answer "I believe in <idea> but I will NOT change public policy to conform to solely my belief." Conversely, it is entirely correct to consider a candidate unsuitable for office if they state something like "I believe <religious belief> is the only correct way to do things, and I work to make <religious belief> law."
Religion can be used to inform public policy, but specific religious beliefs should NEVER be codified into law.
