One speaks of "liberal Churches" about Protestantism ; it is among the " historical" Protestant Churches that such a religious Liberalism can be found. These "historical" Churches are the Reformed ( Presbyterian ), Lutheran, Anglican (Episcopal), Methodist, and some Baptist , Churches. These Churches have turned liberal in the moral field during the 1960ies, but some of them (mainly the Reformed and Anglican/Episcopal ones) were liberal in theology as early as the XIX th century if not previously; nowadays, as far as morality is concerned, they are opposed to the Conservative Curches in that they are tolerant as regards contraceptions ( whatever the means, including the use of the preservative), abortion, homosexuality and even, for some, gay marriage ( cf the liberalism of the Episcopal Church on that subject), divorce, etc... The Conservative Churches are the Pentecostalists, some Baptists and, of course, the Roman catholic Church. This opposition between liberal and conservative Churches is also valis as far as theology is concerned;the tenants of the liberals are that man has a major importance, not just God, that all men, whatever their religion, are God's children, also that Faith prevails on dogmas and doctrines, that religious, ecclesiastical institutions, are only relative, and that the Bible must be analysed, submitted to criticism ( the historico-critical method) and adapted to the modern times : it did not " fall from the sky", but was written by fallible, if inspired, men. For the Protestant liberals, the Christian Church must be engaged in a process of constant reformation; reformation doesn't belong to the past, it is going on.
