It is better to use alternating ice (in a towel) and heat. A hot bath also will help relieve the stiffness, as well as slow movements. If it is a result of repetitive motion, try to avoid that movement for a few days and then find another way to accomplish what you were doing. You will want to reintroduce movement before too long, so you don't lose range of motion in that joint. No.

In some cases, cities at a high elevation can be high enough above sea level as to miss much of the low-level humidity that can cause arthritis sufferers the most pain.

When the tips of your fingers feel like their asleep?

There are two main nerves that can be responsible for this condition aside from circulatory problems. The are the ulna nerve which if put under pressure as a result of inflammation or compression between bone can cause tingling and pain in the ring finger along the pinkie side, the pink and the pinkie side of the hand directly over the ring finger and pinkie. (Ulna nerve compression) can lead to degeneration of the muscles in that part of the hand and permanent nerve damage if not seen to as quickly as possible, The rest of the hand and fingers are controlled by a nerve passing through the carpel tunnel in the middle of the top of the hand under the wrist. Inflammation or build up of tissue can put pressure on this nerve (carpel tunnel syndrome) leading to the same situation as the ulna nerve compression and can lead to serious damage if left untreated. both these problems are often related with inflammation or Rheumatoid arthritis and can be treated with either anti inflammatory and/or surgery.

What can you do for a 10 year old 50 pound Sheltie with arthritis and skin problems who has developed a tremble in his right hind leg?

Hi,

I am sorry to hear about your Sheltie. One of ours was just recently diagnosed with arthritis in her spine and she is only 8, but the vet said it is not uncommon in the Sheltie breed.

It would seem the trembling may be due to pain from your dog's arthritic spine. Has the vet prescribed Rimadyl for your dog? Ours started on a low dose less than a week ago and has shown remarkable improvement. Make sure your vet does bloodwork on your dog before starting this medication. He/she will also want to monitor your dog's liver/kidney function for the remainder of your pet's life.

Other tips: get your Sheltie's weight down. Just like humans, too much weight is more than what our bodies were designed to carry. It's not easy but can be successfully done. Once on medication, your Sheltie should be able to go on walks with you. With spring right around the corner, everyone wins. We break our dogs' treats into small pieces, and no fattening extras from the table.

Going up steps is too hard on their backs - if you have stairs, pick up your dog and carry him/her. This does not always work with ours, because now that she's feeling better, we catch her "sneaking" up the stairs several times a day! Having your dog shed a few pounds will help the dog and the person that has to carry it. Ours is 25 pounds and for me, that is plenty to carry. Also, pick them up to put them in or take them out of your car.

If your Sheltie is king/queen of the sofa, you may want to get a set of two platform-like steps to help him/her get up there. Drs. Foster & Smith carry them, but you could easily build your own. They are slightly angled so are easier than regular steps. We don't have ours made yet, so I put a Rubbermaid step stool in front of the sofa and Minnie uses it - sometimes.

If you have hardwood floors or other slippery surfaces, you are going to want to get some rugs down. We're in this process now.

We've experienced spinal arthritis with one of our other dogs, so we know what to expect. I hope you can get the arthritis pain under control soon. Most dogs react favorably to Rimadyl. If not, there is now another medication you can try.

I am sure your vet has much experience with arthritic conditions in pets. He or she should be able to give your pet many more happy years. Good luck!

Can lidoderm 5 be used for rheumtoid arthritis pain?

LIDODERM® (lidocaine patch 5%) is used to relieve the pain of post-herpetic neuralgia, also referred to as after-shingles pain.

Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease that requires drugs that reduce inflammation which may in turn lead to pain relief. If the damage to cartilage has become so great that the bones are in direct contact strong analgesics or joint replacement may be the only options. However I doubt very strongely that Lidoderm would do anything for any form of arthritis or its pain.
