How can you determine when a person has stopped breathing?
If you do not suspect that there is a head, neck or upper back injury, first tilt the head way back to open the airway. Next put your face next to the person's mouth and nose and look at their chest. Then, for 10 seconds, Look, Listen, and Feel -- Look for the chest to rise and fall, Listen for the sound of breath from the nose or mouth, and Feel on the side of your face for the person's breath. If you do not detect any signs of breathing within the 10 seconds, begin CPR.
If you do suspect an injury to the head, neck or upper back, do not tilt the head back to open the airway. Instead, perform a jaw thrust to open the person's airway. If you are not sure how to do it, just grab their chin and pull it forward as far as it will go without moving the head.

How are the conditions for performing CPR recognized?
Conditions for performing CPR vary slightly from Adult to Children/Infant. Both are termed no signs of life. When no signs of life are present, CPR is initiated. Adult: Tip head & check for breathing & chest rising & falling (called look, listen, feel) for 10 seconds. If no signs of life are present, give 2 breaths and start performing CPR. Infant & Child: Same starting as an Adult; look listen & feel for breathing for 10 seconds. If no breathing, give 2 breaths. Then do a pulse / breathing check for 10 seconds. If no pulse and no breathing (signs of life), start performing CPR. CPR for Adult, Child, Infant is 30 compressions / 2 breaths. Always remember to have someone call EMS; even if you need to make the call yourself.
CPR is not an invention. CPR is following a procedure to give compressions and breaths to humans and animals in the absence of breathing and a pulse.
