First he sings to her 'Che gelida manina' her tiny hand is frozen, she then replies with 'Sì, mi chiamano Mimì' she is called Mimi and finally they go out singing 'O soave fanciulla' the duet opens [roughly] 'Oh lovely girl, oh sweet face bathed in the soft moonlight'. Also - Carmen act 4 C'est toi? C'est moi, the love duet from Madame Butterfly and act 1 love duet from la traviata.

Are all operas performed in the language of the composer?
Not always. There are many operas that have English translations. Amateur opera companies and especially undergraduate opera singers often use English translations of operas in other languages. For instance, last year my college put on Die Fledermaus which is supposed to be in German, but we performed the English translation. Unless the cast is fluent or well-versed in diction with the original language, it is not wise to attempt recitatives and/or dialogue in an unfamiliar language.
What are facts about Lillian Russell?
She was a leading stage personality at the turn of the century. She was both a singer and actress but as far as known never recorded music . (there may have been a ban in effect to protect the concert and stage audience) She was married five times. The argument that she was an operatic soprano is not entirely true, but she did perform light opera such as Gilbert and Sullivan roles- for example (The Sorcerer) this had some American angles added to the dialogue ( a reference to Dow Jones, for example!) so might have been adapted for the Yank market though it takes place entirely in England. ( I saw the operetta a few years ago at the Loew"s theatre. Compared to modern occult tales, a bit inept. Also Lillian Russell may have been the prototype for the character Diamond Lil, but this could also refer to the well-built Hawaiian Queen Liliuokalani- sometimes called Queen Lil- and there is a Diamond Head on Hawaii!

Why do you think Americans have been slow to cultivate enthusiasm for opera?
I feel that Americans as a whole have not been exposed to Opera. People watch TV, media, Internet movies etc. and they live their lives for what they hear on TV and the media. It's a shame because there isn't any quality on TV anymore, just watch a few commercials and you tell what they are promoting. Many parents these days set the tiny children in front of the TV as soon as they can sit up by themselves. Many couples do not attend Operas or Operetta's, Musicals. I think if families would start attending theatre with their families from the time children can sit through them most children would grow up enjoying and keep it in their life.
