Cramping can be caused by any number of things. If it's right after you did some vigorous exercise, it can be a simple muscle strain. Some causes, like electrolyte imbalances and many neurological or metabolic diseases, would probably affect all muscles, not just one leg. There are rare exceptions, though.

Other things that can cause cramping-type pain in a leg include (but are not limited to)

- nerve problems (radiculopathy) originating in the back or lower down, like a nerve root that is getting leaned on (impinged) by a nearby structure

- neurological claudication, which is caused by narrowing of the space for the spinal cord (spinal stenosis), often relieved by leaning forward (as when pushing on a shopping cart)

- arterial claudication, caused by decreased blood flow to the leg, from blockage in an artery, often relieved by rest

- bone diseases in the leg may present with pain

If your leg gets worse over time, or if it doesn't get better with rest and over-the-counter remedies like nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs) like aspirin, ibuprofen, or naproxen, you should see your health care practitioner (nurse practitioner, MD, DO) for an opinion.

Injuries to the coccyx rarely require a visit to the emergency department.

* Avoid sitting down for longer periods of time. When seated, sit on hard surfaces and alternate sitting on each side of the buttocks. Also, lean forward and direct your weight away from the tailbone.

* For traumatic injuries, apply ice to the tailbone area for 15-20 minutes, four times a day, for the first few days after the injury.

* You can purchase a "doughnut" cushion or pillow to sit on. This cushion has a hole in the middle of it to prevent the tailbone from contacting the flat surface.

* Eat foods high in fibre to soften stools and avoid constipation.

Formal Pain Management is a program administered by a Pain Doctor or Pain Clinic, in which the patient voluntarily enters into a contract with the them. It's normally suggested where long term need for stronger pain medication (opiates) are required for moderate to severe chronic pain.

Typical contracts have the patient agree to only use one pharmacy, not "doctor shop" for painkillers, maintain a diary of pain experienced, visit the doctor or clinic at regular intervals, and usually for new patients enroll in counseling. The reason for counseling is the with chronic pain, depression is inevitable, and early counseling helps the patient cope with the cultural, medical and family issues that come with long term chronic pain.

For those of us with such problems, formal pain programs aren't as much of a big deal as it may seem. The program structure protects both doctor and patient from those who abuse the system, making it difficult for those who need real pain control.

I myself am in my 11th year of formal pain management, and it's just a part of life. While inconvenient at times, the alternative is excruciating pain with few options.

It's important that you find the right pain management program - there are too many regular doctors or specialists in other fields trying to cash in on the Pain Mgt. field. Stay away from Osteopaths, Anesthesiologists, Orthopedists, etc. who claim to be "Pain Specialists". Real Pain doctors have special training and certification in Pain Management and multiple Pain Control methods, not just drugs. Chiro, Accupressure, Accupuncture, Homeopathic, all are tools in a real pain doctor's kit.

Well, for starters, if you have a problem with the heat, than you can have some sort of disorder. For me all last summer I dreaded going outside and I would pass out and I got the worst cramps imaginable (I'm a 14 year old boy by the way) and just recently I went to the hospital for a procedure and they said I have a very serious disease called "crohns disease" with the same symptoms u have. A little exercise, even just walking. Sometimes heat helps. Hot water bottle/heating pad/bath etc. If you don't have acsess to those get a clean sock, put rice in it (not instant rice) , and heat it up for 1-5 minutes, then place on area of pain. Talk to your doctor. They will give you medication/pain killers that work. One pain killer that really helps is Naproxen. Make sure you arent allergic to it and if you're under 14 to eat it with a meal (toast, hot dog, oatmeal, pizza pop, Mac n cheese, etc.) you can't take this medication if you're under 12 years old. So be careful. If you're experiencing really bad cramps more than one week of your period you can ask your doctor to go on birth control pills. They can really help. Eat foods with lots of calcium, like green vegetables and milk and cheese. Chocolate helps too, so does ice cream. Try to avoid caffeine and tobacco. Surprisingly, having an orgasm can also help ease the cramping pain so if it seems messy I suggest having it in the shower. You might want to do it yourself as it could be embarresing to bleed on your boyfriend/fiance/husband. Advil and simple pain killers on the rack can help for a short period of time. Sitting down and croutching down can mildly help for mild cases. Try to keep your mind pre-occupied and watch tv or play a video game so you're not focusing on the cramps.
