Is it safe to use wood from your own garden in snake cages?

Yes and no. It depends on a lot of factors. First of all, what type of wood is it? Pine and cedar shavings are both toxic to snakes and so I would assume that the non-shaved version of it would be also. Wood from outside is going to have a lot of bacteria on it, and most of the bacteria can survive sub-zero temperatures, so don't think it's safe just because you grabbed it in February. The best way to disinfect an outside object is to let it soak in HOT water for a few hours (you don't need to maintain the hot temperature, it's alright if it cools off). Throwing chlorine bleach in with it is not a bad idea. But if you do that, make sure you wash it well with water afterwards and then let it soak in a clean batch of water overnight to get rid of the bleach. At this point it is probably safe to put it in your snake's enclosure. However, I would always recommend just spending the extra $15 or however much it is and buying something that you know is safe from your local pet store.
