Why did the Hawaiians invent surfing?
Having spent most of my life in Hawaii I am well aware that the Hawaiians take credit for surfing. But, Hawaiians did NOT invent surfing! Surfing is depicted on ceremonial vessels of the Viru Culture, 3000 years ago. On these vessels a man is shown standing aboard a little reed craft, surfing. This means that the earliest surfing in the world that has actual physical evidence took place in Peru. There is no anthropological or archaeological evidence for a Polynesian origin of surfing before the mid 1700s.
Surfing involves getting a board, shorts or wetsuit and heading out into the ocean to practice standing up on and manoeuvring the board on moving waves.Thats all!

The "Stinger" as it's called by many outside of Hawaii (*actual name is "Sting"), is a design made famous by Ben Aipa in the 1970's. The Sting surfboard's original design intention was that to be of a very short board length, somewhere between 5'10" to 6'6" in length. and approx 19" to 21" in width. The "Sting" namesake came from the "wings" or rather the transition of width, 1/3 up from the tail where the board had a distinct 1/2" or so "wing" aprox 18" to 20" up from the tail. In other words, the board was wide from the nose to the wing, then it narrowed in from wing to tail. Basically, you had the combo of a wide board with a narrower tail section. The Sting was usually finished off with a straight edged swallow tail, but pintails were found on the longer "gun" shapes also. The original Sting was meant to be ridden in small fast waves. I have owned several Aipa Stings in the past and currently have a new one shaped by Ben Aipa, using his original templates like back in the 1970's. I LOVE Stings!
Can my ten and a half foot long longboard be used as a stand up paddle board?
Many long boards can be used as a Stand Up Paddle board, and many of them are becoming more flexible and can also be used as a sit-on-top kayak when a seat is added.
Usually, SUP boards are 11 - 12 feet long. The weight cut-off is 170 pounds - use 11 foot board if you are under 170 - use 12 foot board if you are over. However, lighter weigh people can use shorter boards. The water conditions also need to be considered - surf, flat water, rough water.
If you can balance well on the board, without the tail dragging or the nose dipping, the board will probably work for you.

Why don't surfers wear life preservers?
When paddling out into the line up, the easiest way to do so is to duck dive. The way to do this is to push your board under the water, and then your body should follow the board under the wave. Surfers do this so they don't get a face full of water and don't get pushed all the way back to shore. It can also get in the way when popping up or in the barrel. However, when small children are out surfing with their parents, they wear life jackets just because they cant swim
