A very short explanation is, you vibrate your lips while blow air through the mouthpiece. Pushing valves changes the length of tubing that has air going through it, causing different notes to sound.

The first way to answer that is whos playing it. Whos playing the horn is more important then the horn. For what its worth though the Giardinelli GTR 512 and 812 are both fairly good horns, great for the price. I would go with the 812 if you have the 400 more dollars to spend.
