Witchcraft

This is the category where your questions about witches and witchcraft as a spiritual path should go. Based on an ancient shamanistic way of life, witchcraft is a spiritual system known as "The Craft of the Wise" and were a valuable part of villages and communities. Practitioners were the healers and leaders of their people. Modern witches follow the cycles of the sun, the moon and the seasons of the earth for guidance and knowledge. Most, but not all witches practice some form of magic in its true meaning.

What time did witches live?

We live somewhere between 70 and 100 years or so.

Or were you under the impression that ours was a dead faith?

Actually we live just as long as normal human beings. And witches don't do weird potions in double bubble boil and trouble stuff. We mix herbs and create harmony. I am a wickan. which is the same as a witch. And we can die at any age. we can be shot by a murderer at 15! (Which we hopefully wouldn't)

The origins of Stonehenge are unknown, but Druids do go there to celebrate the Pagan festivals etc.

I wish I could add something to this - I would advise any person reading my reply to be very very wary of calling any other person's faith in Nature - by the name of Witchcraft. That term seems to attract such a SLUR - it is a form of belief

People to profess to be Christian use it as a way of taking the "High Ground" which is something no one is entitled to do - it is a question of Belief - of Faith and various people who think they are "Better" because of their BELIEF - are so NOT

What started the suspicion of witchcraft?

Oftentimes, people in the Burning Times would accuse people who they had had a disagreement with or people who were excluded from the community as witches. An old woman who had a disability and lived on the outside of town would be a prime target, especially if someone had a grudge against her and she had no relations in town.

How can you do magic?

Magic comes from within thyself...It flows in and out of all living things..You just have to have the strong will power to call it

I would think of it more like a form of energy, techniques like visualization ask you to see it inside yourself, and rather than force it, simply watch it happen. It's a strong form of energy that flows freely, inside and out. It's always there, indestructible, and called by many things. Some even argue it's what created the world if you're willing to go that far. Now, if it helps you, my teacher told me to think of it best as the Force from Star Wars. Though it's affect is much less visible with the physical eyes.

In other words, use a magic book

What do witches make in their cauldrons?

Cauldrons are used as ritual bowls, to mix ingredients; as ritual pots, to boil liquids; or as a safe vessel for burning things. They also represent the West - water or the North - earth. In addition, they represent the female.

A cauldron is sometimes used to keep water or burn fire in a ritual, or for a spell [e.g.: place a candle in the centre and fill water halfway and light it..]

Sometimes it is used to brew portions.

Note that, in many ancient books, spell/portion ingredients are encrypted with words that sounds odd. But those are not the actual ingredients we have to put, after referring to the codex. See the related link Names of herbs for more information.

Do spells have to rhyme?

No they do not.

What rituals use black coins or nickels?

In a sense a ritual practice, coins are used by nurses and/or undertakers to close the eyes of people who have recently died. In Europe there is or was considerable ritual, for example with the Italian royalty a black cloth thing similar to a blindfold was used in tandem with two gold pieces- thus the Eyes of Queen Margherita were closed up- by either family members or nursing sisters ( nuns). obviously the types of coins vary as to the importance of the person involved. these are conserved as family relics and are not buried with the deceased. As thiis is connected with dead bodies- there is a loose paralell to Voodoo and related practices. Mercury dimes were popular for this task as they are small and easily concealed- and Mercury was the messenger of the Gods!

How do you cast a mind control spell?

There may be such spells out there somewhere. I have never encountered any to date and I have been studying for decades.

What I feel should be pointed out at this time is that NO responsible or ethical practitioner of magic would teach such spells to you. It is not the habit of those of us who work with magic to undertake ANYTHING that would be detrimental to another. Addendum: There are some who feel that if it can be PROVEN to be less harmful than not interfering, that it is still ethical. However, it is an extremely delicate issue.
