If your son is on Straterra Clonipin Lexapro Lithium and Abilify for bi-polar ADHD is that too much medication?

There are a lot of different meds out there on the market. What works for some may not for others. As you probably have seen, patients sometimes need to try different combos and that really is the only way to find out what will work the best. Sometimes 3 or 4 meds are needed and sometimes 1 or 2 work. It is very important that patients report any side effects, good or bad. It may take a little time but be patient and you will find something that will work. Hang in there! The meds you said he is presently taking are normal for his ADHD and Bi-Polar. Just to let you know, I am 38 and have been diagnosed with both of the same disorders. Find a good MD who is very experienced in those illnesses and make sure there is a good communication between him, yourself and son. Last, make sure the doctor listens to everything you or you son tell him. He will be able to give your son the best treatment if the lines of communication are open. You should have him explain in detail what each drug your son is taking does to the body and how it helps. Some drugs are only given for side effects of another. But most important of all is to let your son participate 100 % because he will most likely follow instructions and confide in you if he has any fears or questions. Sorry I kind of blabbed a little too much. I just have had a lifetime of handeling my conditions along with family members who also suffer various conditions. I would be happy to talk to you about my experience but for right now it is important that you confide in your MD and get your questions answered. If you still feel unsure, go get another opinion or change physicians. Good luck.

As margret said it's really very individual when it comes to these sort of diagnosis. I have both adhd and bipolar disorder as well and take several drugs. It's all about finding the right combo that works for your son. I wouldn't suggest tampering with his current combo if it's working for him. Although clonipin lithium and abilify are three medications which treat mania. And both lexapro and lithium will treat the depressive phase. Again it depends on the severity but some of these meds are redundent. Klonopin is also typically used for anxiety not bipolar disorder although it will work to control mania. Klonopin is something i take myself but i would be reluctant to give it to a child unless everything else failed because it can be quite addictive. If your son suffers from anxiety their is a bipolar med called Valporate that works on the same chemical in the brain as klonopin but it is not addictive. Also straterra affects the neurotransmitter norepinehrine and lexapro affects serotonin. Their are a class of drugs called SNRI (serotonin norepinehrine reuptake inhibitors) that affect both. Some examples of which are Effexor XR and Cymblata. If he took one of them he wouldn't need to take 2 pills and could just take one. Like i said before it all depends on his individual response and possible adverse reactions to the meds. But always get a second or even third opinion.

What is the most commonly prescribed medication for ADHD?

The most commonly prescribed medication for ADHD is methylphenidate. This includes the following brand-name drugs: Ritalin, Concerta, and Focalin. And you can't forget adderoll and vyvanse. they worked best for me.

Does lack of REM sleep lead to ADHD and could Strattera further complicate things?

ADHD is a genetic trait that is present at birth. It is the way a person's brain is wired. It allows people to think quickly, learn by doing, excel under pressure.

In adults with lack of REM sleep, often a Sleep Study will reveal various degrees of sleep apnea. People with this affliction may stop breathing as often as every 45-seconds, through the night. Thus, they awaken feeling drained, fatigued, and often with a dull headache from oxygen deprivation.

Strattera merely helps an ADD/ADHD person maintain focus. The drug also tends to interrupt ejaculatory function in men. However, Strattera should not interfere with REM sleep.

What if you don't take your medication for ADHD?

Then you will be jumping off the walls and you would be very hard to control. you would talk non stop and that is not what the people around you want to hear all day.

What do you take when you have attention deficit hyperactivity disorder?

I didn't know my child was adhd could i have ruined her by being to inpatient?

I don't think you need to worry about having ruined your child. Like any normal child, I think a child with ADD/ADHD do need discipline and strict lines and boundaries to stay within. Now that you know, you can still apply the same rules, but with a different approach. I would recommend talking to your child's physician/therapist for advice on how to work with them. There are also amazing resources on line, (Such as webmd, and everydayhealth.com) that can give you insights on how to work with a child suffering from ADD/ADHD.

I've had ADHD all of my life, but haven't been medicated since I was an adult. I can tell you, from the perspective of someone with it, that it's not good for people to treat you any differently than they would someone else. You need to be understanding, yes, but you also have to make sure to take control and teach your child how to properly work with their disorder, because they now have a long and challenging road ahead of them. It's hard to focus at work and school, and now in my 20's, I'm only just learning how to work around this and do what I need to get on with my life.

You haven't ruined your child. And you don't need to be afraid. Just do your research, talk to someone who can help, but more than anything, all you can do is just love them. Greatest lesson my Dad ever taught me - just love them, and always, always do what you think is in their best interest to help them grow up to be good people, in control of their lives, no matter how hard it is.

Good luck. You have a very long road ahead of you.

How can a child with ADHD avoid falling asleep when reading doing homework or other 'boring' tasks?

what i have found to work for me is music. a headphone set doesn't offer the visual distraction and keeps a separate part of the mind active. it also gives you something enjoyable to do with the not-so-enjoyable. i only say this because it worked for me. i was diagnosed with ADHD as a kid and believe myself to still suffer the effects now.

Why school should add one more hour?

I think that school hours should not be reduced to 2 hours cause what are you suppose to learn in 2hours the answer is nothing you'll just be stupid and some people don't need to be or don't want to be and you won't have enough time to get an boy/girl friend or make any friends at all so my opinion is that they shouldn't reduce it to 2 hours it's just completly crazy

I have noticed that many ADHD boys I know seem to like cross dressing myself included. Does anyone else know of any connection between cross dressing and ADHD?

Several people I know have noticed this connection. I have not seen research that confirms it absolutely but I believe there must be a relationship between them.

Crossdressing is often described as an obsession which amounts to one's inability to detach *attention* from some object of focus, so there is a connection. The question no one seems to be able to answer about crossdressing is why focus is drawn so strongly to the feminine role. Likewise no one seems to know what is the source of attention disorders.

I believe that some young males are traumatized early on by being ostracized from feminine intimacy. As with other species, human males are expected to be strong, independent, detached, resourceful, objective, etc. It's hard and scary to try to live up to these expectations. To some boys, girls "have it easy".

I believe that being pushed to "be a man" causes some boys to both narrow their focus to the feminine intimacy they have lost and to lose some ability to focus on the rest of their experience. Thus the same crisis might cause both crossdressing urges and attention problems. Seems reasonable to me.

ADD and ADHD can lead one to a negative mode of focus and attention, which, as Winifred Gallagher in her new book _RAPT_ explains, causes one's width of focus to narrow dramatically. Do something that cheers you up and your mood becomes more positive. Crossdressing can be such a mood enhancer as it literally pulls you out of yourself and makes you refocus on a wider area of how you look and how you behave. For some people I think crossdressing can be an antidote for depression. If CD and ADD have the same cause this antidote is all the more effective.

Lately I am beginning to think that crossdressing must produce some kind of neurochemical high, perhaps due to adrenalin and endorphins, which may give a temporary escape from attention problems as well. There is a lot going on here and we are not getting much real help from the so called experts.

Addicted to Oxycontin would your adhd stimulant work?

An "addict" to a narcotic is probably already dosing with multiple psychoacting medications - which is why their livers and kidneys fail. What do you mean by "work"? Are you trying to "undo" the effects of oxycontin?

Multiple dosing and drug addictiction is what killed Elvis and Michael Jackson.

Where did Attention Deficit Disorder originate?

ADHD was first described by Dr. Heinrich Hoffman in 1845. A physician who wrote books on medicine and psychiatry, Dr. Hoffman was also a poet who became interested in writing for children when he couldn't find suitable materials to read to his 3-year-old son. The result was a book of poems, complete with illustrations, about children and their characteristics. "The Story of Fidgety Philip" was an accurate description of a little boy who had attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Yet it was not until 1902 that Sir George F. Still published a series of lectures to the Royal College of Physicians in England in which he described a group of impulsive children with significant behavioral problems, caused by a genetic dysfunction and not by poor child rearing-children who today would be easily recognized as having ADHD.1 Since then, several thousand scientific papers on the disorder have been published, providing information on its nature, course, causes, impairments, and treatments. The previous history was not easy to find albeit found in the National Library of Medicine. However, this history is not detailed regarding what I believe to be the truth about ADD (AD/HD is the hyperactivity included but not the same). Having suffered from it myself when young, but never diagnosed, my problem happened not from birth but later after my first two years in grade school. I lost interest in academics and sports became my métier then. I did not develop a love for academics until I was 21, some fourteen years after realizing I had ADD. But my mind was racing not my physical body. Hence, I started doing transcendental meditation at 18 that helped some but increased one's natural nervousness neurosis. Not until I found Paul Twitchell (The Eckankar founder) did my ADD problem completely become controlled. I say controlled because ADD only is a problem if the attention dynamic cannot be switched from unhinging the academic focus to a more illogical, "spaced-out" state. In other words, poets and musicians need the latter in order to dementalize. In other words, metallization is not the sole mode of existence and if it were we never get anything done nor have great art. Not to say that illogic contributes to fine art, but feeling and spirituality must have the dynamic state in one's balanced behaviour. Humour is mostly illogical and where would we be without it? Hence, ADD only is a problem if the person cannot control their attention. One needs a meditation-like practice for solving the problem. Only the teaching of AKATHA can provide the solution www.akatha.com. Introspection is good provided one closes the eyes, at least for thirty minutes per day, but without certain sound mantras, the solution is not perfected. Thus, ADD is a problem not only as of nutritional imbalances, but society becomes so noisy and aberrated along with academic lack of detail that the individual shifts his attention from it. Give some truth and detail and see how quickly the kid's attention increases. A friend, years ago, had a child that supposedly had ADD. I started speaking in Sanskrit (sounds like child's gibberish) to him and he raced towards me knowing that someone was doing something different and interesting. He was very small for his age and I suggested that once he got taller, the little bundle of energy would balance-out and sure enough he did. Thus, give the children something interesting like detailed truth and stop the nonsense propaganda like CNN-like stuff, network nonsense TV, and advertisement. Coupled with proper introspection, the world could be an ideal place in which live.

Does ADHD cause someone to be 'emotionally abusive'?

It can. People with ADD don't usually have the social skills that most have. They say things without thinking which is sometimes hurtful. When they are children they don't do this intentionally, however, because of peoples anger toward them for such comments and often being accused of deliberately hurting people some will just say the hell with it and not care anymore or begin deliberately doing it. People with ADD are more likely to be abused and so they themselves are more likely to become abusive. We learn to treat others from the way we have been treated.

ADD does not automatically cause someone to be emotionally abusive and not all ADD people are abusive but people with the disorder are more likely then average to be abusive both emotionally and physically.

What are the inattentive type of ADD?

Attention Deficit Disorder has several symptoms. One of the most common of these symptoms is the inability to pay attention to any one idea, object, or person for a sustained amount of time. This would be defined as "inattentive".

Being unable to put one's attention into , for example, a teacher's lecture on a particular subject would cause a student to be called "inattentive" by a teacher.

This would cause the student to have a poor history of studying and retaining information as well as collecting and forming new ideas.
