Not that many. So far, according to news reports there have been a little over 12 people that have died from ADHD medication. What they didn't state was HOW they died.

Adderall is one of the safest stimulant medications to take....Also, death from these medications is extremely rare. The only reason they placed that black box warning about death on these medications was because of the several children that died in Canada.

In technicality, you can't die from this medication unless you have a congenital heart defect or high blood pressure OR you severely overdose. The children that have died were from the following...congenital heart defects, overdose, and putting excessive stress upon the heart while on adderall...something that you DO NOT do. Yet, all of these parents sit around and blame adderall. I personally believe that this is a result of neglect and misinformation, not adderall.

i am 35 yr f 5'31/2. I weighed 158lbs when i first started taking 20mg adderrall xr and 10mg lexapro. Its been 6 1/2 weeks since i began, I now weigh 142 Lbs. You may lose your appetite and get very tired in the evening. I have no problems sleeping at all. I do not have OCD. I was diagnosed with ADD & stress induced depression.

As young children grow, their body weight and size changes. This can definitely impact the efficacy of ADD medication. Either dosage may need to increase or a whole new pill might be needed. In adults, efficacy can be altered by body chemistry changes, though it is not very common.

In simple language this means if your identical twin (monozygotic, or meaning you share the same genetic map) had ADHD , still there is only 50% chance that you might have ADHD. This means there are more than genetic influences, which could include the risks from the environment.

So in simple terms: this is work under a lot of research at this time, and we don't know what causes ADHD, but there is a heavy influence of genetics in this.

In fact, research has proven that individuals with ADHD more likely to try smoking at a younger age and more likely to transition into a full-time smoker. Nicotine like amphetamine (Dexedrine, Adderall) or methylphenidate (Concerta, Ritalin) causes a release of dopamine and reduces the breakdown of other neurotransmitters in the brain. This causes nicotine to be more rewarding to those with ADHD due to its calming effects.

Depends. Generally speaking, those with ADD/HD learn differently from most, meaning they don't respond well to standard classroom type instruction. this doesn't mean they can't learn, and somewhat reflects our school system's shortsightedness (or narrow-minded approach to learning). Just because we can't take tests well doesn't mean we can't write well, etc. (or vise-versa).

But many of us do have related Learning Disabilities (dyslexia, etc.) which exacerbates the problem.

This is extremely complex to explain, so you'd better have time to listen. In your brain, there are three main brain waves-theta waves, SMR waves, and high beta waves. When you sleep, your brain is full of delta, which rejuvinates your brain. But when you are awake your brain has theta. The job that theta has is to rejuvinate your brain every few moments when your awake. High beta is the opposite of theta. High beta is sort of your emergency situation wave. It is running at full speed. When people have to much high beta, their brain is running extremely fast which is not good. SMR is the perfect middle. When someone has ADD they have excessive theta waves. Their brain checks out every few minutes, but stays out too long, causing the person to be inattentive. ADD medications, such as Ridalin or Aderal are stimulants and cause the brain to run faster. In this case, the ADD medications work Much too often though, people with excessive high beta are confused with having ADD. When someone's brain is running on high speed, they often tend to focus on one thing and block everything else out because their brain is so exhausted which makes it look like they have an attention disorder. So then the ADD child is put on an ADD medication which makes their brain run faster. As you probably figured this out, this doesn't help the child. Both of these conditions can be fixed with Neurofeedback. I would explain that too, but i think that would be a bit too much. There isn't an opposite of ADHD par say. Schizophrenia would be the chemical opposite of ADHD since it involves too much dopamine in the brain as opposed to little dopamine in individuals with ADHD.

I once was forced to take focalin because people thought I had ADHD, (in actuality, I had asperger's syndrome,) and you probably won't get much effect from it, mostly the side effects. It's made for ADHD, so it makes you tired, and occasionally dizzy and some confuse this for "vertigo". You should nopt resort to a higher dosage if it does not work, because the fatigue and dizziness will worsen, and you will become miserable. Focalin xr is made to swat the H from ADHD, that's all.

I was also on focalin xr 10 mg before but after just 2 weeks i immediatly stopped. Focalin has a side affect of a serious "down" after it wares off. I went through a sudden and radical depression and pretty much was mean about and to everyone and everything. Im now on adderall xr, much better. I highly recommend switching.

Yes; ADHD medications (stimulants) can cause psychosis and paranoia in otherwise healthy individuals.

Paranoia can also occur if ADHD medications are abused and consumed in large quantities which can lead to a condition called amphetamine psychosis.

Dyslexia schizophrenia does not exist. The two conditions, dyslexia and schizophrenia, are completely different.
