A total of 36 prisoners escaped. Most were recaptured or killed trying to escape. 5 were never accounted for and were presumed dead. Officially, no one escaped.

Their boredom level seems to go down and they become happier if they talk to other staff members or psychiatrists but I find they dont seem to use their of duty staff buildings a lot. I usually find mine in yard or mess hall a lot. Maybe having more or better buildings for them would help if they are in good condition. carol b

Alcatraz was originally used as a federal prison from the year 1933 to 1963. In the 1970's, there was a huge wave of protests from Aboriginals. In the year 1986, Alcatraz became a National Historic Landmark.

This means that only in time of an active rebellion or foreign invasion may it be suspended, and, even then, the President's action is subject to Supreme Court review. Generally speaking, the Supreme Court requires that suspension be as limited as possible (i.e. only in the affected areas, not elsewhere), though, of course, this is highly dependent on the situation, and is a drastic step not taken lightly.

It was virtually impossible to escape from because of the cold waters of the bay. BTW, Alcatraz prisoners were fed high-fat, high-calorie diets and denied exercise so that they would not be in condition to escape.
