How does the risk of bulimia nervosa compare to that of anorexia nervosa?

Although bulimia can sometimes be harder to detect than anorexia it can be just as harmful in both many similar and different ways.

It can leave you at risk for malnutrition which can be caused by both under eating or overeating. The word malnutrition indicates deficiency for energy, protein and micro nutrients (like vitamin A, iodine and iron) either singularly or in combination. This can lead to even greater health risks including (but not limited to) respiratory infections, kidney failure, blindness, heart attack and death.

Although both anorexia and bulimia leave you at great risk for becoming dehydrated, bulimia exposes your body to greater risk because the process of purging ( in most forms ) tends to drain your body of fluids. Once one becomes dehydrated they are exposed to even further symptoms including dizziness, weakness, or darkening of urine. This can lead to kidney failure, heart failure, seizures, brain damage and death.

It could cause edema which is swelling of the soft tissues as a result of excess water accumulation. aIt is most common abdominal area of bulimics fro laxative or diuretic use.

Like anorexics they are also at risk for electrolyte imbalance and more, but bulimics are especially at risk for some stuff that anorectics are not.

Bulimics especially are at great risk for tooth decay. Self induced vomiting could also cause tearing at the esophagus,it could even cause gastric rupture which is spontaneous stomach erosion, perforation or rupture. It could also leave you at risk for gastrointestinal bleeding.

How do you treat anorexia patients refusal to eat?

sometimes when I can't do it for myself, I have to try to do it for someone else. This disease is deadly and robs me of rational thinking. I am consumed with my weight. Even after treatment.

How do you get better am suffering from anorexia?

well its really all in the mental, so therapy and help is the best. sometimes medication.

I honestly believe that you can't "fully recover" from any eating disorder. You can go to counseling to help you realize that your body is beautiful, and that you should love yourself. You could get medication to help as well. There are many things that you can do, but it will always be there. It will always linger, and for many people such as myself; i can never forget it.

Basically the only thing you can do is try to ignore it. Try to move on.

What are the side effects of anorexia?

Anorexia can cause damage to all the body systems and organs. Some examples are; it can cause tooth decay, damage the esophagus, stomach, liver, kidneys, skin, bowels...it can cause the menstrual cycles to be irregular or even nonexistent, decreased energy, low blood sugar, low blood pressure, weakened bones.

If you don't eat for a month how much weight will you lose?

Probably more than you want to, in all the wrong places, and you could do harm to your bodily systems. Fasting causes many unwanted changes, including reduction in metabolic rate, which is something you don't want if you are trying to lose weight. It is better to eat sensibly, satisfying your need for energy and protein while avoiding 'excess calories' from too many sugars and fats.

You weight loss on any diet would depend on a lot of variables, such as how much you weigh, how tall you are, what is your metabolism like.

However, I would like to point out something very important. If you stop eating for a long time, your body interprets this as being a time where food is hard to find. Hence, it will put itself into survival mode, which means it will take as many calories as it can from any food ingested. Consequently, when you start eating again, you will put back on the weight you lost and then some. Your body will just think "Oh food! Better be prepared for next time I don't have some!" This will eventually lead to weight gain.

Thus, if the goal is weight loss, an healthy alimentation (less sugar, whole grains, lots of fruits and veggies and some proteins to keep you full) and some exercising will be more profitable in the long run.

Millions of men and women around the wolrd suffer from anorexia. Many unfortunately go un-noticed or un-documented, meaning that numbers are probably higher than predicted. It depends on the exact person. Each person needs to follow their own specific plan to recovery. Usually, the foods will be very healthy. That includes fruit vegetables, lean proteins (meats), nuts, dairy, and whole-grains.

How is Anorexia and Bulimia related to unbalanced diet?

I'm not quite sure what you're asking...? Anorexia and/or bulimia can cause an 'unbalanced diet' and lack of nutrients to the body, but you do not simply 'get' and eating disorder from and unbalanced diet. An eating disorder is not just 'not eating' or other eating disorder behaviors, but much more extensive, involving mental and emotional patterns as well as the eating habits. (Or lack thereof. Ha.)

What do anorexic eat for breakfast?

If they are eating (and some anorexics might not even have breakfast at all), it will usually be very low-calorie. Something like fruit would be ideal, because it is filling, sweet, and most fruits are high in water, but low in calories. Generally, no milk or juices because they either have fat, added sugar, high amounts of calories, ect. Tea is almost alwasy 0 calories, so an anorexic might lean towards tea over something plain, like water, for added flavor without the added calories. Anything sugary, wheat (oatmeal, cereal, bread / toast, pancakes, waffles) or protein (eggs, sausage) is usually out of the picture.

What is an extreme eating behavior that can damage your body?

If it's "extreme," it can eventually kill you.

In 12-step terminology, an addiction is any behavior that is now independent of what caused it and is making your life unmanageable. It is something that you alone cannot stop, despite knowing that it is causing you harm and do not want it.

Compulsive Eating fits these criteria. Obesity often results. The burdens placed on the body due to obesity destroy the healthy production schedule of necessary hormones, etc... (the link between obesity and Type II diabetes has recently been found to be exaggerated).

Body Dysmorphia is what is commonly referred to as a "distorted body image." It often leads to Anorexia Nervosa (self-starvation) or Bulimia (binge-purge). Bulimics starve themselves for a time, then binge on huge quantities followed by self-induced vomiting. The acid from their vomiting eventually erodes/eats the enamel on their teeth, their gums and their esophagus. Fatal bleeding can result from this.

How can you starve yourself without feeling hungry?

Until you're dead, or until you become a Tibetan Monk.

If someone has a mind of an anorexic and starves themselves but if they do eat not a binge they purge is that anorexic with bulimic tendencies?

It is important to recognize that "bulimia" or "bulimia nervosa" is a diagnosis. Like any other medical diagnosis you must meet certain criteria in order to be diagnosed 'bulimic.' According the the DSM IV (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders) in order to be diagnosed with bulimia you must: 1) demonstrate episodes of binge eating (eating within any 2 hour period an amoutn of food larger than most people would eat. Binge eating is characterized also by a sense of lack of control while eating.) 2) demonstrate innapropriate compensatory behavior to avoid weight gain (i.e. self induced vomiting, inappropriate use of laxitives, fasting, or excessive exercise) 3) The above binge/purge cycle continues over at least a three month period of time, with an average of two binges/purges per week. 4) The individual is strongly influenced by body image and weight 5) The binge/purge cycle does not occur only during episodes of anorexia nervosa.

If all these criteria are not met, than technically, the individual is not bulimic. However, if the individual is expressing some of the symptoms, than perhaps that individual would be diagnosed with "EatingDisorder Not Otherwise Specified" (EDNOS.)

If this continues, it cna lead to infertility or other complications.

Is there rehab for anorexia?

There are places a person can go to if they have an eating disorder, anorexia and/or bulimia. They are usually called medical treatment facilities, not rehab. An eating disorder is a medical illness, like cancer. Rehab is for something like drug or alcohol abuse. A self inflicted problem, that was (usually) caused by substance abuse. A person can be born with an eating disorder, it's not a problem that is caused by substance abuse, although people who are afflicted with an eating disorder might abuse a substance as a Result of the medical problem.

Uhmm, eat?

Another Answer

Anorexia Nervosa is not about food: it is about power. When the person suffering with the disease realizes that the disease has power over him or her, committed, medical attention is required.

Generally, in confinement, patients are required to gain up to half a pound a day, or forgo privileges, such as television. A prolonged confinement may be required in order to work through the physical and emotional issues involved with professional help and guidance.

Most importantly, the family and support system must recognize that the disease cannot have power over them, too. They must make it clear to the 'patient' that a refusal to eat or to participate in mealtimes is powerless over the group.
