They don't hate mice, they are just wary of them. Mice are small enough to easily hide in small shrubs, and the elephant has no idea that it's there until it rushes out from said shrubs in front of the behemoth. What do weaver ants eat?

Following proper cultivation procedures, minimizing pollution, monitoring collectors and hunters, protecting transportation routes, refraining from pesticide use, and respecting habitat are ways to take care of weaver ants. The insects in question (Oecophylla spp) number among the world's beneficial animals because of preying upon fruit tree pests. The fatty acid- and protein-rich weaver ants serve as prized delicacies and traditional medicine in Oriental cuisine and culture so their populations can be threatened by over-zealous collectors and hunters.

carpenter ants do not eat wood like termites, but they do bore through wood to create galleries for their nests. Why do ants surround sperm?

I assume by sperm you mean the ejaculate of a mammal. If so, suppose some of the fluid fell where any scavenging species of ant, or many species of meat-eating ant, should happen to find it. Then, especially if it still is moist, and the place is dry, the ants would simply regard it as a protein-rich, nutritious fluid. They would behave similarly if they found a drop of milk or blood or something similar. To them it would be about as valuable as finding a drop of honey, or even more valuable than honey if they were short of protein rather than sugar. The ant that discovered it would fill its crop and carry it back to the colony, where it either would store the food or share it with its fellow-workers, or feed it to the larvae. Passing on food in such ways sometimes is called trophallaxis. It then would return to get more, and if it happened to be a species of ant that recruits fellow-workers when it finds food, it would use some form of signal that would cause them to follow her to the food. Pretty soon the droplet would be surrounded by ants, and they would keep busy till they finished it or they had had enough.

What is the size of a leaf-cutter ants hill?

There is no simple single answer to this question. Even a smallish leaf-cutter ant nest can be several metres across and a few metres deep, with a bit of the mound showing above ground. Also, there are dozens of species of leaf-cutter ants and some have smaller mounds than others. Leaf-cutter ants also live in a number of different places with different soil and climate, even though they all live mainly in conditions not far different from tropical rainforest, the conditions are enough to affect the nest sizes. Remember too, that figures for the largest nests do not mean that every nest you see will be about as large as that.

Still, the large nests can be very large. Some are tens of metres (say 30 metres) across and several metres deep. They could contain a fair-sized house. What is more, such a colony cannot easily make such a nest much larger, but they branch out and make smaller nests (that also can be pretty large) like satellites or "suburbs" around the main nest. We could say that such a cluster is a compound nest.

The population in one of those compound nests is about several million ants, about as large as the population of the largest human cities.

Is it good to have black ants?

We had huge black ants and found out they were carpenter ants. They are different than termites but can still cause structural damage to a home. We had an exterminator come out. He comes out twice a year now. We were lucky to find out where their nest was (neighbors tree). It was crawling with millions of them one night around midnight. It was like a horror flick. Google carpenter ants and see if they look like what you have.

When do female and male ants mate?

Most all ants mate in one of two ways. The first is known as the male-aggregation syndrome. At a time usually triggered by environmental events such as a large rainfall, the males and unfertilized queens, which have been patiently waiting underground, suddenly take to the air and swarm in what is commonly called the nuptial flight. This swarming often appears as a column of flying ants rising off the ground. The queen is usually inseminated in mid-air and then flies off to a locale where she breaks off her wings and begins to dig a hole either in the ground or in plant material, which will become her nest. She lays her eggs and remains with them until they hatch, living off of her own body reserves. Eventually they will hatch and become the first of her workers that will take care of her and the colony as it increases in size and numbers.

The female-calling syndrome has queens aggregating at the surface of colonies and calling males to them via pheromones. There are many exceptions to this basic description of mating. For example, some females are inseminated on the ground and then fly off to find their nests. With another species, the males will be swarming close to the ground waiting for females to emerge from their colonies. When she appears, they surround her in a rolling, writhing ball of males until the newly inseminated female breaks out of the ball after about 20-30 seconds and flies away to find a nest site.

What are desert ant's food?

Sometimes they take out the carrion, but they feed on plants and roots as well.

How any eggs does a female ant lay a day?

Most ants are workers or soldiers and never lay any eggs at all; only the queens lay eggs, and they lay thousands and thousands because they have to produce all the workers and soldiers as well as new queens. Queens of some species that have large nests eventually have to lay millions. There is no single ant called a house ant, but most of the small ants that enter houses have several small queens in any one nest at any one time. Even such a small queen will generally lay thousands of eggs in her lifetime.

What are the specific jobs of ants?
