Do fish have ears?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Yes, fish do have ears inside their heads, but many do not hear sounds very well. They use what are called "latteral lines" that run along the sides of the fish. They use these to sense changes in water pressure. This is similar to the way humans ears sense atmospheric pressure changes.

The lateral line (note spelling) is not used for pressure detection, but rather for detecting water motions around found around fish (within a body length or so) up to about 100 Hz. The lateral line has nothing whatsoever in common with human pressure change detection - the receptors are different and atmospheric pressure changes are very low frequency (below 1 Hz).

The ears of many fishes are able to detect sound (particle motion) and while many species do not hear as well as humans or other mammals in air, they are sensitive enough to be able to detect the "acoustic scene," which means that fish can hear the sounds around them of biological relevance. Indeed, hearing in vertebrates evolved (in fishes) to give the animals information about their extended world, far beyond the range of vision. In effect, by using hearing, fishes (and all vertebrates) get a 3 dimensional "view" of the world around them that extends far beyond the range of other senses. This "acoustic scene"works in day and night, and enables animals to be aware of their environment.

How many fish can you have in a 20 gallon tank?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

not many. Until recently i had a 15litre 'Baby Biorb' bowl with 2 goldfish in, however it did seem quite cramped even with just those 2 in there so I have upgraded to the 30litre version.

i guess however that it depends on what type of fish you are planning on keeping, i would say that my 15litre bowl would house maybe half a dozen minnows without problems, but anything larger will just feel cramped and won't be good the for the fish's health.

hope this helps to answer your question The rule of thumb for freshwater tanks is 1 inch of fish per gallon. That'd convert to 0.7 cm per liter if you have metric fish.

What are the methods of fish capture and its uses?

Most fish collected in the wild are netted or trapped to avoid too much damage being done to the specimens. They are then sorted and placed in holding pools or large containers to await transport to a distribution area.

Can gourami and dwarf gourami live together?

User Avatar

Asked by BradRandall

Not really. There will be some bullying in the tank if the gourami is bigger than the dwarf gourami. Usually the dwarf will be left lone but there is usually fin nipping.

Are Oscar fish social?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Almost to a fault! Oscar fish are very social and in the wild spend a lot of time playing with each other.

They are by far some of the most intelligent fish out there. In the absence of other fish they will begin to consider you their playmate.

Many oscar fish will learn to wait at a certain corner of the tank because they know you are normally home at that time. They will swim around in excitement when they see you, and follow you with their eyes as you walk around the room.

My friends oscar would often watch us watching TV, sometimes he would watch too. He seemed to really like the Harry Potter movies.

How many male guppys can you have to how many females?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

*EDIT BY AUTHOR* I'm a beginner and I'm getting 5 guppies. So should I get 1 male and 4 females or 2 males and 3 females?? I don't mind if I have a lot of babies, I'm giving them to good homes anyway.

Short answer. Dont get five. Long Answer: You should always have 2 or three females to males. So I would recommend getting six. Do you know how to raise and birth fry? Or how to take care of them? These are important questions if you are getting different genders. Best of luck to you.

Do tetras give live birth?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Yes. Creatures whose eggs hatch inside the parents are call ovoviviparous.

What happens is the female gives birth to fry (hatched baby fish) that are curled up. The fry will "open up" within a couple of hours. then they will begin to swim around. Make sure that you have lots of hiding places for them!

Do molly lay eggs?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

That's correct, mollies do bear live young. Though on rare occasions, they do, for whatever reason, "abort" their pregnancies.

Just this evening a heavily pregnant black molly of mine produced about a dozen bright orange eggs, and three fry. One of the fry is seriously underdeveloped and wont make it, I'm certain. The babies have been having a feast on the leftover eggs, so there must be a reason for this behaviour. It may be an instinctive response, as my mollies live in a large tank with some large fish. It could be that my molly has exhausted her supply of sperm, and only fertilised the eggs she could. There are any number of reasons.

It is a shock seeing eggs appear, where usually the explosive darting fry greet one at a molly pregnancy, but it does happen!
