What whales live in Boston harbor?

If you go just outside the Boston Harbor area you can find Humpback, Finback, and Minke whales. These are the types of whales you commonly see on the Boston Harbor whale watch cruises in addition to dolphins.

The time to watch is seasonal. From Jan to May you can see whales within the Cape Cod Bay area and after that better chances are further out to sea or towards the mid-atlantic or south-eastern coast.

For details you can check out the website (sponsored by the New England Aquarium) for the Boston Habor whale watch cruises.

How do bottle nose dolphins contribute to biodiversity?

A niche is essentially when, where, and how the animal lives. A Bottle-nose dolphin lives near the top of the food-chain, although it still has some predators, such as the great white shark. It's territory is the ocean- it lives in many different areas, so you can look up its habitat. The dolphin feeds off of schools of fish, and sometimes squid. Some species of dolphins also migrate, depending on the location of the animal.

Are stellar sea lions endangered?

The Steller's Sea lion (Eumetopias jubatus), is also known as the Northern sea lion. It lives in the northern Pacific. The population of eastern and Asian steller sea lions (California, British Columbia and south east Alaska) is currently at the status of "under threat". The western Steller's sea lions (Gulf of Alaska, Bering Sea, Russia and Japan), particularly those around the Aleutian Islands, were placed on the endangered list in the 1990s, their population having fallen by 70-80% since the 1970s. It is thought that killer whales, their main predator, has played a major part in the reduction of their numbers, as has overfishing of the steller sea lions' food supply. In the past, they have been hunted for their skin. Steller's sea lions do not hibernate, as they are well insulated by their blubber.

What are some interesting facts about blue whales?

Some of the answer is blue whale is definitely the largest living warm blooded sea mammal ever existed on this planet and sometimes can reach a length of 30.5 meter (100 feet) and weigh over 100 tons.

On land an animal the size of a blue whale would be crushed by its own weight without the support of large heavy bones. Because its body is supported by water, as a sea animal, the need for heavy bones to support its weight disappeared. This, plus the availability of a large food supply, have made it possible for the blue whale to reach such an enormous size. The blue whale makes deep and rumbling sounds which can be felt as much as heard. These low frequency sounds travel long distances through water, allowing blue whales to communicate with each other over hundreds of miles of ocean.

Their scientific name is Balaenoptera musculus.

Also, in the 20th century, 99% of the Blue Whale population was killed by whalers!
