The best I can think of are ある (aru) and いる (iru). The both mean to be or to exist. The first is used for inanimate objects (e.g. rocks, rivers, trees) and the second is used for animate objects (e.g. animals). Also in polite language you can use "imasu" or even more polite "irasshaimasu" (います、いらっしゃいます) for "iru".
Also, the verb for is/am/are is です, pronounced "des". I thought I should add that because it is the main "being" verb.
