What are some types of Arctic scavengers?
The Artic Wolf, Artic Fox, Glaucous Gulls, Snowy Owls, Wolverines, Northern Fulmar and Ivory Gulls are all considered scavengers in the Arctic Regions. Though many of those mentioned can/will sometimes hunt, they usually scavenge. Polar Bears sometimes scavenge as well.
No
Greenland, the largest island in the world, is located south of the North Pole. The North Pole is not located on land. It is located in the Arctic Ocean, which is permanently frozen in the area around the North Pole.
How did the arctic people adapt to the harsh envioroment that they lived in?
They Hunted whales, walruses, and seals.
They developed the kayak.
Why do Northern polar ice cap floats on top of the Arctic Ocean?
Ice has a smaller density than water therefore it can float on water instead of sinking to the bottom. Unlike the south pole there is no land mass to support the ice. The only thing that makes up th noth polar ice cap is ice.
IT is cold because the sunlight it receives is very indirect. This radiation has to go through a larger part of the atmosphere, so more of it is absorbed. The earth is heated by these rays, so the Arctic is unable to get very warm.
How do polar bears keep warm in the cold?
Two of the physical adaptations that help polar bears stay warm in cold climates are the fact that their fur is translucent and their skin is black. That's right! Fur that is translucent and skin that is black!
Lets discuss this!
Polar Bear fur is not white. They have so much fur so close together per square centimeter that when you look at it it only looks white. If you actually took one of the polar bears fur and held it up to a light or under a microscope that the light will more or less shine through it.
Now why is the fur translucent? That relates to the fact that the radiant light energy of the sun need to penetrate to the black skin of the polar bear to keep the the animal warm in cold climate conditions.
The second part of the answer to the question relates to the fact that the skin of a polar bear is black. As you know on a hot day if you touch the an item that is black or dark in colour that it will be significantly warmer than a light coloured item. If you have never observed this, next time you see a dark coloured car and a light coloured car walk up to them and touch their surfaces. You will observe that the dark coloured car is actually warmer than the light coloured car. The reason for this is because dark items absorb more of the sun's energy and light items reflect more of the energy.
The same holds true for our polar bears' skin. When the sun's energy penetrates the translucent hairs of the polar bear the sun's energy strikes the skin and the absorbed energy will help the polar bear stay warm in cold climate conditions of the arctic.
Yes, there is floating sea ice in the Arctic; and it's melting!
Scientists used to say the Arctic would be ice free by 2050. Now they think certainly by 2030, and perhaps even by about 2016.
The speed of events is why scientists are so worried. The only known way to stop this melt is to cut greenhouse emissions triggering these changes, and there are few signs of that occurring.
''This is absolutely the critical decade for action,'' said Australian climate expert Tim Flannery.
What is the population of the Arctic?
The human population of the entire Arctic Circle currently stands at about 2 million people (contrast that with zero in the Antarctic).
These are indigenous people, many of them Inuit. Many of them are in Russia, Finland and and Norway. The Arctic Circle of North America is made up of about 3% of all the population in the Arctic Circle.
The most reliable figures I can find for the Arctic Circle, puts the population at around 607,252 people.
Arctic belongs to what continent?
No, but Antarctica is.
No, the Arctic is just an area of ice and snow and some land situated on the north part of Earth.
The Antarctice, on the other hand, IS a continents.
Is Arctic fox endoskeleton or exoskeleton?
Arctic foxes are mammals and have internal skeletons (endoskeleton).
What is the land mass of the Arctic Region?
The Queen Elizabeth Islands (extreme Northern Canada) are the closest. Part of Greenland is even closer, but Greenland itself is largely an ice floe in it's northern area, and you did say "land mass".
Are there blizzards in the Arctic?
Yes, there can be thunderstorms in the Arctic. They are uncommon because storms require sufficient heating at the surface. When they do form, their lightning can cause destructive wild fires.
Why do people live in the arctic region?
If you are used to the cold and don't like warmth, the Arctic is the best place to live.Thats how some people survive in the Arctic. But if you're afraid of being eaten by the Arctic creatures there, you better not live there!
Is the arctic considered a desert?
There is an Antarctic Desert. Almost the entire continent of Antarctica is considered desert. Some clain that the Arctic is also a desert. However, much of the Arctic is either open sea or sea ice and not land. Those areas on land are mostly tundra which is a different biome from a desert.
