What were the fauvists main ideas?

In Fauvist principles colors were freed from their typical use. For example, plants were no longer only restricted to colors like green and brown. Fauvist painters were able to manipulate emotion with the use of powerful color positioning. Fauve paintings consisted of intense brushstrokes, rich surface textures, energetic linear patterns, and bold colors in order to arouse the emotions of their viewers. There is notable influence from Post-Impressionistic painters such as Van Gogh whose legacy was built upon during this movement. Fauvists also noted their influence from Impressionism, which they desired to develop on. Although the movement did not last long, they did help evolve the direction of painting by liberating the restrictive functions of structure and color.

Is morality an appropriate subject matter of a work of fiction and if so what is the role it plays in art?

Yes, it's certainly appropriate. The purpose of good literature is to allow us to see a little about ourselves, a glimpse into the human condition and hopefully leave us with a motivation to improve our lives. Good literature will motivate us to empathize with the main character, to recognize our flaws as he discovers his, and to do whatever is necessary to fight our daemons.

Why did the progressive movement occur?

The original Progressive movement was the culmination of multiple reform movements motivated by the conditions of turn of the century America, particularly in major cities.

Massive influxes of immigrants led to overcrowding of many urban centers, which resulted in poor sanitary conditions and low salaries for menial labor. These meant deplorable conditions for the lower urban classes. Also, these conditions fostered alcoholism, cultural strife, and other social problems.

Meanwhile, decades of corporatist economic policy (that is, collusion between the State and Industry to plan the economy) had led to general oppression of the working class and seeming omnipotence for major corporations.

At the same time, many European nations were growing extremely powerful and held world wide empires that included parts of Africa, the Middle East, and the Far East.

Progressives hoped to address these problems through a "scientific process" of using State power at all levels to control aspects of the economy for the national and popular interest, coerce social trends into more acceptable norms, and produce a world-power United States. Progressive presidents like Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson greatly expanded the power of the State over the economy and personal lives of citizens, while building American military might and influence.

While the lofty aims of Progressives are often praised, in hindsight, many of their reforms failed to solve problems: often they were repressive, ruined economic growth, and established a difficult role for the US in world affairs. Examples of Progressive works include the Federal Reserve, the income tax, the Spanish-American War, US involvement in World War I, and Prohibition.

When did graffiti art start?

Graffiti has been around since men could draw on walls. Caves from 30,000 years ago often exhibit over endowed men and beautiful (by the standards of the time) women. It could be argued that these were some of the first tags

Modern graffiti art came from New York City in the late 1970's. Artists refined their techniques and use of spray paint to turn what was once a marker of territory into a true art form. Graffiti art has been recognized in the fine art world since the first graffiti-centered gallery opened in Rome in 1979. This exhibition introduced New York's underground scene to the world, and today graffiti artists are some of the most popular on the pop-art scene.
