Why is paper money important?

Paper money allows you to carry large values very easily - a $100 bill is the same size and weight as a $1 bill, so you can carry 100 times as much value. It's also easier than carrying huge amounts of coins - think what $1000 worth of quarters would weigh, for example!

Who introduced coin system in India?

When Mohammad bin Tughlaq introduced copper currency in the 14th century, he made a critical mistake?he failed to put an official stamp on the coins. Soon, every housewife was melting her copper vessels, every mohalla had sprouted a mint. "In those times, the face value of a coin was the same as its intrinsic value. Tughlaq?s idea of substituting silver coins with token copper ones was good, except that he was naive," explains Shailendra Bhandare, a numismatist with the Ashmolean Museum at Oxford. Adds Subhadra Anand, history professor and principal of National College, "People paid their taxes with copper coins, but demanded their wages in silver. The treasury overflowed with counterfeits, and the economy eventually collapsed." Even today, it?s possible to stumble upon these 700- year-old fakes at Chor Bazaar?and with them a chapter of history. India's history is vast and extensive and it is impossible to talk about Indian coinage without delving into its history. India's historic coinage can be dated back to some 2600 odd years. A trail of India's intricate coins can be seen with the coming of rulers like Alexander the Great, the Dutch, the Portuguese and the British. It is important to note, that old Indian coins are not just odd pieces of metal, they are our links to the past which help us understand our rich culture and heritage better. A hint at the multi-cultural forces that shaped this country is witnessed from coins dating back to Kanishka, featuring Iranian goddesses and Zoroastrian ideas. Indian 25 paisa coin Most kings and dynasties which ruled over India would otherwise be totally unknown, are today made famous and given a place in history only because they have been inscribed on their coins. A very apt example is the Indo-Greeks and other nomadic kingdoms and dynasties, which existed in Afghanistan and North-West India (the Pakistan today). Paradoxically, this has made the study of Indian history and coinage a very interesting and challenging proposition. Ever since Mohen-jo-daro and Harappa have been discovered, more than 500 seals have been exposed with fine representation of animal figures and pictorial writing which has not yet been deciphered. Trade between Mesopotamia (modern Iraq) and Harappa is evident with the finding of two seals. With the coming of the British East India Company, minting of coins began from mid 17th century. India became independent on 15th August, 1947 and left a legacy of non-decimal coinage. In 1982 a 2 Rupee coin was introduced as an experiment to replace the 2 rupee note. The note ceased circulation till 1990 after which it was minted every year. India has issued several types of coins commemorating great leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Sri Aurobindo, Chittaranjan Das, Chhatrapati Shivaji and many others. The coins circulating today are the 25 paise, 50 paise, Rs. 1, Rs. 2, and Rs. 5.

What is the value of a quarter rupee coin clearly dated 1082 and please tell you why this coin is dated 1082 because this coin was not in circulation until many many years later many thanks?

Not all countries use the Gregorian Calendar. Different states and regions of India have used many different calendars over the years, and for different reasons and purposes.

Due to the efforts of the Calendar Reform Committee, India currently use the Gregorian Calendar side by side with the official "Indian National Calendar" or Saka Calendar.

Please note that this is little more than a poorly educated guess, but your coin is possibly dated according to the Kolla Varsham Calendar, which runs at 824 years behind the Gregorian Calendar, making your 1082 coin (Kolla Varsham), a 1906 coin (Gregorian).

Your coin in good condition, might get $2 USD.

A reputable coin dealer will be able to give a more accurate valuation.

Importance of inscription and coins in Indian history?

The study of ancient and medieval Indian coins brought to light the names of many kings about whose existence there was no literary or inscriptional evidence. For example the recent discovery of Kotalingala coins in the Karimnagar district of Andhra brought out the coins of unknown Kings namely Gobada, Narana, Kamvayasa , Sirivayasa and Samagopa. These kings ruled part of Andhra after the fall of Mauryan empire and they preceded Satavahanas. It is also true of medieval period when kings like Yildis and Qubacha ruled parts of Northwestern India during the rule of some Delhi sultans. These kings were known to the historians as governors of those provinces but their coins prove that they were independent rulers. Same is true of many such kings in different parts of India who came to be known through their coin finds. The coins also helped in corroborating the information provided in puranas. Vayu, Vishnu, Brahmanda, Baghavata and Matsya puranas mention about Satavahana kings and coins of some of those kings found in different parts of Deccan support the puranas. But facts provided by coins seem to be more accurate than puranas. For example name of the first king of this dynasty is mentioned variously as Chismaka, Sindhuka, Balyhita, Simuka etc in different Puranas but coins name him as Chimuka which must be correct since they were issued during his rule while puranas were written centuries later and hence many inaccuracies crept into them. Coins of some rulers of the family were found which were missed out in the Puranas namely Kumba and Karna. Hence coins help in reconstructing our ancient history much more accurately than what is possible from other sources. The coins also help historians in ascertaining the religious leanings of those kings - neha sharma(new delhi)
