Are wood stoves bad for asthma?

A quick search using "Asthma wood smoke" revealed several useful references indicated below. The general consensus is that the smoke from wood burning fireplaces and heating units is an irritant for asthma sufferers. This is probably due to both the inhalable particulate burden and the complex organic molecules such as aldehydes, ketone PAHs etc. present in the smoke.

The impact of smoke is felt both inside the home heated by the wood combustion and outside in urban areas. Other recreational uses (e.g. fire pits) add to this outdoor air burden.

Proposals to change the systems to minimize the impact in homes generally do not address the community impact.

Can asthma cause ulcerative colitis?

Both asthma and ulcerative are examples of inflammatory diseases (there are many more).

Clinical studies have shown that if you have one inflammatory disease there is a higher chance you might develop another - so to take this example, someone with asthma is slightly more likely to develop colitis (however, it doesn't mean that they definately will though).

Scientists think this link occurs is because in inflammatory diseases the immune system goes into overdrive for the wrong reasons (in asthma it might be an abnormal allergic response to pollen or dust, in colitis an abnormal response to food types). Unfortunately, it's not completely understood.

I live with someone who suffers from both and the best advice I can give is to identify the triggers (if you haven't already) and stay away from them e.g. dust/high fat diet etc. Best of luck.

You have trouble breathing some times and couthing to what is it?

There are a wide range of diseases and symptoms that can cause trouble with breathing and coughing. For example, trouble breathing can range from shortness of breath, which can be due to pulmonary, cardiac, deconditioning, or musculoskeletal problems, to wheezing, which again, can be pulmonary, like asthma, or cardiac, like heart failure. Cough can be also from pulmonary, cardiac, GI, to name a few. Common problems, like asthma, exercise-induced bronchospasm, or viral or bacterial infections, can cause trouble breathing and coughing. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, emphysema, heart failure, pulmonary embolism (blood clots in the lungs), cancer, and many other problems can present like this well. It depends on when the symptoms appear, how long they are present, things that make it better or worse, any other problems that you might be having as well (fever, chills, night sweats, high blood pressure, swelling in the legs, productive vs dry cough), and so on. The best idea is to see your doctor to have your symptoms evaluated.

Can you outgrow asthma?

I am 37 years old. When I was about 17 I didn't have any trouble with my ashma anymore. I thought I had outgrown it. When I had my first child, my ashma let it be known it was still there. So basically, I was told by my doctor that you can not outgrow it, just may not be so bad at times in your life. Hope that helps.

Actually it is proven you can outgrow it. I'm 31 and currently serving in the USMC. I was born with asthma and since I turned about 14 my asthma decreased a lot, and for about 11 years now I haven't had a single trace of it. I went to re-enlist and had to retake my medical evaluation and got in. As you know the rules on asthma were tighter then than nowadays. And you would think even if you get into the service with asthma you wont be able to go out in the Field. Well I've been through 2 tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan and combat experience. So don't ever give up and even in most cases that you get it for life, its always treatable

Can your body build a resistance to your asthma medication?

I was diagnosed with asthma in the early 1980's. I was taking theophylline for many years when it stopped working. Some time in the 90's, my doctor gave me Singulair and I've been taking it ever since. My asthma is still under control. I guess your body can develop a resistance, but, in my case, it seems to be over a very long period of time.
